So work last weekend was INSANE! After 6 days working straight at the restaurant, I am definitely getting to my breaking point. I know last week was well over 40 hours of work, and school is bearing down as well. Last night I had 2.5 hours of sleep, donated plasma at 7:15 a.m. (while studying for my pathogenic microbiology exam that I took today at 10a.m)...
Thursday night was horribly slow at the restaurant which is rare. Thursdays and Friday's often fill the restaurant with Jazz enthusiasts, and people with time to sit in my section all night with drinks. Friday was definitely fun...Deb, my supervisor, gave me the 20 person table on the floor. I've been given some big tables before but this one is the biggest thus far (by myself) and it also brought some new challenges, 1) it was on the floor and not in one of our private Signature rooms, which meant I had to talk to 20 people while a live jazz band blares through the restaurant, and 2) A few couples were seriously in a hurry and needed everything right away! Damn, I felt so awkward bringing salad to one couple (Dr. Mack from NDSU) before I was even able to take the order of couples at another end...on top of all this, I had a 7 person table that got the regular highschool jazz goers...which wasn't too much fun. Those kids generally relate to a lot of soda refills and hardly a tip. But after running my 20 person table, 3 bottles of wine (which I present the label, open, allow them to taste, and pour everyone's glass), all I can think about is how many salads and baskets of bread I'm going to have to make up, and who has drinks to pick up at the bar and how that group of kids is giving me the evil eye. It was fun to see Zach join them for a few minutes, never making the connection before that he was also a highschool music enthusiast, and not knowing where the boys went to hs. But that was fun, and I realized that I have a lot of friends I havn't seen in such an incredibly long time. For Zach is was around December, but all my friends not in Fargo, too, I havn't kept up tabs lately....I'm sorry, I do miss everyone.
But as far as the 20 person...
...yep...seperate checks...all the couples. I had about 12 tabs open for the table, and the table seemed to evolve through the night as some people would leave and new ones would take there place to join the party...go figure.
Saturday night was even worse for busy....everyone had 6:00 p.m. reservations, Deb gave me a 16 person table :)))!!! and I also had a section on the floor with about 5 tables on it, one of which almost instantly filled with 7 people, and then a 3 top with two teenagers that finished the bread basket before I even got 2 feet away from the table. That wasn't the end to the Saturday madness...after the dinner rush there was almost no one between 8:00p.m. and 10:30p.m., but then thanks to an announcement made at the 400 person attended jazz concert in the Crystal Ballrooms, our restaurant instantly went from empty to full with people wanting cappuccinos, desserts, and cocktails! So an entire restaurant that simultaneously sat down wanting service and there are three of us...and we were ready to close at 11p.m. After running around for 20 minutes helping tables, we had to tear down and reset the entire restaurant re-clean all of the machines (cappuccinos are very time consuming and messy)
Followed by an exhaustingly slow Sunday and Monday closing, the weekend was crazy. Luckily I have tuesdays off for class, I was able to study for pathogenic micro, but none of which aided in my sleep. Then for the rest of the week, I work tonight, Friday, two shifts on Saturday, and Sunday schedules aren't up yet...but I think things will work out:)
The apartment is looking, nice, things are going well in life, it seems, but I can seem pretty overwhelmed, but looking back at my preparation for this semester, this is nothing surprising.
==========================================\
I've been really missing my family lately. I just want to see my mom and dad and get into sharped tongue comment swapping with Scotty. I want to see my Uncle and remember why I've called him my best bud since I was no taller than his waist. I miss all the animals, too...Katie Bear, Iggy, Whiskers, Jesse, etc...the horses.
[family most of all] I havn't seen them since my hasty departure right after Christmas:( That's quite a long time, I will also enjoy being home and associating the house being relaxed which is something I've been craving for a while.
I was hoping to visit California and all of my coastal bound relatives, but with my internship, I don't think there will be time...The summer would be great down there, but it will be something to look forward to down the road.
Anyways. I should work on a paper for a group project in speech right now.
