CHARACTER
NAME: Lirael
FANDOM: Old Kingdom Trilogy
AGE: Nineteen
GENDER: Female
TIMELINE: During the three months between the end of Abhorsen and the start of The Creature in the Case.

HISTORY: Lirael was born in the Clayr's Glacier to her mother Arielle. Lirael didn't know who her father was (unusual for a Clayr; her mother left the Glacier to find a man, and then didn't record who he was), and at the age of five, her mother left the Glacier again by herself. She didn't return, and Lirael was left to be brought up as an orphan.

For the next nine years of her life, Lirael was watched over by her Aunt Kirrith. When she was younger, she didn't notice how different she looked from her cousins, but as the years went by it became blindingly obvious to her how different she looked to them, and this led to her being miserable. The only light on her horizon was gaining the Sight. By the age of fourteen, she had not gained the Clayr's birthright, the Sight: the ability to see into the future or see possible futures. Most Clayr recieve the Sight by eleven, and on her fourteenth birthday and hearing another eleven year old has gained the Sight, Lirael becomes miserable enough to contemplate committing suicide instead of attending the Awakening ceremony.

However, this idea was cut short as, when she reached the only Tower she could jump from, she chickened out and decided that she didn't have to die. She then had to hide since Sanar and Ryelle were talking to the Abhorsen and the King about a certain area of the Kingdom that they could not See. Discovered after the King and the Abhorsen left, Lirael was let off the hook as it was her birthday, and she explained she was still Sightless. Sanar and Ryelle comforted her with the knowledge that they, the most powerful Clayr, did not recieve the Sight until they were sixteen. To help her, they offer to give her a job to distract her from being Sightless. Lirael accepts, and is put to work in the library; and her memory of the Abhorsen and the King is erased.

Working in the library, Lirael managed to uncover a Mourdant by accident, a creature of Free Magic that then attempted to kill her. Escaping, she found a stone statuette of a dog and then vowed to find a way to bind the Mourdant - she was afterall, in a library. During the process of research, Lirael decided to create a puppy Sending using the soap statuette (basically a bunch of Charter marks that could mimic a puppy), and this resulted in her creating her irreplacable companion the Disreputable Dog. With Dog's assistance, Lirael managed to bind the Mourdant, learn how to make Charter skins, and continue to explore the library.

Skip to her ninteenth birthday, and Lirael was still working in the library and was still Sightless, and had again contemplated suicide on her seventeenth birthday. Whilst exploring a passageway in the library with Dog, Lirael discovered a mysterious room with a set of seven panpipes, the book of Rememberance and Forgetting, and an accesory called the Dark Mirror. Immediately after finding the first part of her heritage, the Clayr finally See her, and then Sanar and Ryelle are forced to make a hard choice - ask Lirael to leave the Glacier to find her future and to fufill the vision.

Along her journey to the Red Lake, Lirael meets up with the Prince, Sameth, and the cat-like creature Mogget, a bound creature of Free Magic. She later discovers that Nicholas, the man on the lake, is a friend of Sam's that he was trying to save. Together, she, Sam, Mogget and Dog team up to go and rescue the world from whatever Nicholas is planning to dig up at the Red Lake. En route, they reach Abhorsen's house, and here Lirael discovered her true heritage - that she was an Abhorsen, a binder of the dead, with the blood of a Clayr also running through her veins to make her a Rememberancer - and on a more astounding note, who her father was, the previous Abhorsen Tercial, and that Sam is actually her nephew.

Reaching the Red Lake and fufilling the Clayr's vision, Lirael discovers the spheres contain the Destroyer, Orranis, one of the nine original beings in the world before the Charter came about. Orranis stood opposed to the seven that wanted the charter; eight remained neutral; and was bound inside two spheres, that, under the necromancer Hedge's plan who was using Nicholas as a puppet, were going to be joined together and then release the Destroyer upon the world. Lirael and company rush back to the wall to stop the joining of the Spheres. Despite their speed, they are too late, and the Destroyer is completed and manifests itself, killing Nick, and starts to move on up to the stage of which it is aptly named. Lirael, Sam, and her family, old and new, stand in for the original seven and attempt to bind Orranis once again.

From viewing how it was done in the past, Lirael knows that she must sacrafice herself for Orranis to be completely bound. Willingly, she does so, the pain streaming through her arm. Dog, in one final act, bites off her hand and leaves her alive, dying in Lirael's place. Suffering from the loss of her only friend, Lirael briefly withdraws into herself, before Dog 'sent back' Nick and he helps her to recover.

Afterwards, Lirael returned to the Old Kingdom with her family to the Royal Castle in Belisaire, continuing her Abhorsen-in-Waiting duties, which eventually leads her to Lebensbaum.

PERSONALITY: Due to not wanting to converse with other Clayr as she didn't have the Sight, Lirael doesn't talk very much. When she worked in the Great Library, she only said up to a couple of sentences at a time. She doesn't feel the need to fill long silences with idle chatter. If she doesn't know you, then she won't speak much - and depending on their authority, will be embarrassed or simply pass them by. If Lirael knows a person she is actually quite talkative and honest about her feelings. Despite the fact she feels distant, she can grow to trust easily, simply by seeing that someone is benefiting from her company. Like all human beings, she just wants to be needed.

Lirael is also very mature. As she was orphaned, she can easily look after herself and was forced to grow up, so occasionally acts childish as a result of that. She can act a lot older than she looks, despite her naivety to the world and policies regarding it due to a sheltered life with a group of women who constantly talk about the future.

Like her sister, Lirael is very stubborn. She is unlikely to back down on a point she's made, even if she knows she's completely wrong; she won't back down easily. When she has her mind set on something, she throws herself into the task until she can fulfil it. She may doubt herself, but usually sees it through. She is also slightly foolhardy to the extent where when she doesn't know all the details and others were wait for more, Lirael will go and do it and not think too much about the consequences or about things she doesn't know the factors for.

From working in a library, Lirael loves books and the search for new knowledge. Nothing delights her more than learning things, and from living a sheltered life in a glacier, she is very curious about most things around her.

Lirael is emotionally battered from the first nineteen years of her life. From being in a place full of relatives who were almost all near mirror reflections of each other, with just her as the odd one out, she feels insecure of herself a lot of the time. She felt like she doesn't belong, and from that she still doubts herself a lot. The Sight is everything to a Clayr and is their Birthright - it was just another reason to feel out of place. Since finding out her true heritage, this has lessened, but the pain of being outcast and never having her childish dreams fulfilled of gaining the only thing that mattered still weighs down on her. Even with her new family and friends, she still feels out of place and sometimes struggles with the social atmosphere of being close to people.

When she was younger, she almost had an unnaturally morbid curiousity with Death, but this was just her 'Death sense' of an Abhorsen manifesting itself to a certain degree.

SPECIAL INFORMATION: Lirael is the Abhorsen-in-Waiting, the next Abhorsen to be after Sabriel. In Lirael's world, there are necromancers who bring back the Dead to plague the living: the Abhorsen is the one good necromancer who use their powers to send the Dead back into Death. As she is an Abhorsen, she can enter the river of Death and banish things there, or make sure a creature walks through to the Ninth Gate. Death is seen as a river in the series and there are Nine Gates in total, until the final gate where a spirit is put to rest. She is also an adept charter mage, probably one of the most powerful of her time. However, in her version of Lebensbaum the Charter is oddly weak, so her magic is mostly out, and even though she feels Death and can sense the river, she cannot step into it or enter it other than been thrown there herself when she 'dies'. She also has her bells, but if she has nothing to banish she most likely won't use them unless absolutely necessary. If the bells fell into the wrong hands, this would most definitely cause a problem.

Lirael is also a Remembrancer, which is basically someone of both the bloodlines of the Clayr (who see the future) and Abhorsen. The remembrancer is someone who can see into the past. However, to use the powers of her Dark Mirror she must enter Death, and as she can't, she can't use her powers as Remembrancer.

She also lost her hand, so has a replacement made from Charter magic. If someone sees her hand up close, they would be able to see it is not skin but thousands of tiny little marks sluggishly moving where the skin should be. This thankfully still works for the majority of the time so she can go about her business.

INVENTORY: As with what would be expected of travellers Lirael has some food in various compartments of her bag pack, some medicinal herbs, not much money (mostly Old Kingdom currency), and one or two sets of clothes. Her bag is mostly empty, however. On her person she has her sword, and seven bells in varying sizes - the bells of a necromancer, of this case Abhorsen to cast the dead back into Death.
