my motivation, however is different from yours; self-deprecating or not, I believe that the lives of those around me are far more important than my own, regardless of who those people are...it's a bit different from your instinct to protect

I'd like to say that I would try to stop him. I believe that I probably would, but who knows what your fight or flight response will do in a situation like that.
I absolutely agree with this article. College students are not children. That paragraph about the Montreal Massacre made my blood curdle.

Honestly, I think I would probably want to save other people, but knowing it would almost certainly result in my death, I have to say that it's most likely I'd freeze up like a dear in the headlights caught between the suicidal option and the selfish option. I mean, if freeze up in improve for fear of doing the "wrong" thing... with the stakes that much higher, I wouldn't trust my judgement. If somone took charge of the situation tho, I think I would do whatever they said: be it "On three we rush him," or "Run you idiot."
Everything I just said goes out the window if there are kids in the room. Maybe it's a girl thing, or maybe it's some natural human instict to protect our comunal ofspring, maybe it's just cause they're the only ones smaller and weaker than me, but with kids there's no question. They must be protected at all costs.
