something about legacy...

Okay, I am a little late with this, but I do want to kind of recap 2004.  Maybe then I will be able to get some closure and realize it is over (and also that it began).  As usual, I am still stuck in 1998, so everything after the Spice Girls is a blur.  I will do my best to pretend that there is some meaning in the measurement of a year, although ( Read more... )

Yes, it's my survey! My influence is far-reaching. Or something.

I don't think people should lie to themselves. I think everybody on the planet likes Modest Mouse -- whether they'll admit it or not is something else. They're a band that you can't help but like. I bought the album The Lonesome Crowded West and listened to it. It's not really the kind of music I like and the album is like 74 minutes long, but I CAN'T STOP LISTENING TO IT!! I'm sitting there like, "Why the fuck do I like this album so damn much?!" I think Modest Mouse have some secret, conspiracy-like hypnotism device playing in the background of all their songs that makes you like them subconsciously. (Though it doesn't hurt to point out, just so I won't ruin my indie cred by being like, so TOTALLY mainstream, that my favorite MM CD [and one of my favorite CDs period] is The Moon & Antarctica, which is the one that nobody seems to know about. Their loss.)

Tears for Fears -- yeah, words can't describe how much I love some of their songs. I think every last damn word in the lyrics to "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" resonates with me somehow. I can relate to that whole damn song so frighteningly well.

YES!! Someone else who's seen Eternal Sunshine!! Isn't that a GREAT movie? Oh, man. No one at school has seen it because it's probably way too "complex" for their feeble minds to understand, but it's really a wonderful movie. I haven't seen Kinsey yet, but I want to -- it sounds really interesting.

Decriminalization of marijuana -- why the hell don't they do it? I really don't see why it's illegal in the first place. Besides, you legalize it and the people who are going to do it probably all do it already. The rest of the people all have this preconceived notion that it'll fuck you up for eternity or whatever, so what harm is legalizing it going to do? It's not like you're going to have 3-year-olds on street corners smoking joints. Oh well, whatever. (Nevermind.)

Kurt Vonnegut and Chuck Palahniuk wrote the best books I read last year, let's put it that way. They're both about 150% awesome. I've also been looking for a copy of The Perks of Being a Wallflower, which I'm pretty sure you mentioned to me once or twice. It sounds like it would be a really awesome read.

ANYwho, I really do wish you the best of luck in getting everything back in line. From what you've told me and what you've written, it sounds like you had one absolute hell of a year. I wish I could accurately convey how much I hope things start to look up for you, but the right words are eluding me.

You should call me sometime, Emma. We'll talk, or hang out, or do whatever. I miss talking to you. You're like my "oooh, I can talk about everything that interests me and be sarcastic and cynical at the same time, AWESOME!" type conversation person. So yeah. DO IT! Or else, um, or else you...won't do it. Yeah.

As you said: Here's to 2005!
