Supernatural Fic: Borderline (part 1/3)

Summary: Found again, and hidden, where no-one can find them. A collection of scenes in the grand tradition of hoping this is something like what airs on Friday. A million thanks to lolachrome, my beta and my inspiration.
Notes: this was created alongside lolachrome as she planned her gorgeous vid, Borderline. Since mine was finished before 7.17, and hers was definitely finished after, the works ended up diverging -- as she puts it (so well), "they exist as two different musings on Supernatural through the lens of the same song--alternative universes of each other, perhaps."

The padlock was rattling. The man on the bed woke. He'd lain awake for at least one hour - more? - after the sun went down. He hadn't realized he was asleep. He wasn't used to sleeping.
He rolled to face the place where he knew the door was in the dark. He knew Dean's fumbling hand on the lock, the combination of liquor, haste, and... something else. He could hear Dean breathing through the door even across the room, loud as though he could see mist from Dean's mouth leaving trails through the streetlight splash from the window.
He knew Dean was carrying the little battered duffel he'd had with him the day before. He knew Sam was asleep three towns over, sweating out his usual nightmare.
He knew in a moment the door would burst wide and Dean would say his name and try not to ford the room in three strides and press their bodies together. He did not know if Dean would succeed.
His name. Dean called him Cas. He knew Dean, knew his bowed stride, the way he gripped his beer, the way his breath hitched when their eyes met. The way it always had. He knew almost everything about Dean but this: who Cas was.
