Much mumbled his way through the last of his conversation to her back, but she was only aware of the shape of the mantle before her, of the way the day clung in such a threatening manner to choke her no matter which way she turned.

She turned to watch him set down the ring and walk out of her door, without looking at her, not needing her to dismiss him now anymore than he had as a child.

Marian shoulders sagged as she walked, as if drawn to that table and it's bitter prize, in the shadows of the main floor allowed to be weak and lost now that she was alone.

She set her hands on the table edge staring at it for far too long. It was the asper in her heart even sitting there on the table, all beautiful in it's thin spring design and color. After tilting her head, and pursing her lips, she finally reached out to pick it up.

She stands as if sorrowing, her head bowed over her ring, and Robin feels a rush of anger at the attention she shows it; so much that she must look at it for a long while before taking it up, as though it might disappear under her very fingers.

"Perhaps I should have left it after all."

He tips his head back, lifting his chin in the direction of the trinket that gleams so innocently at her fingertips, and then lifts his gaze to stare at her. "Since you seem so relieved to have it back."

Her spine straightened, and face blanked, at the first sound from his mouth, even with him behind her still, and if she wasn't a Lady she would have said the line of words which crowded her mind.

But she was, at least as much as he ever deserved, which was why her fingers never actually picked it up yet, but her voice was incredulously annoyed already.

"Lurking in the shadows of my house to make sure he'd bring it back to me? Could you not do it yourself, if it matters so much to you?"

Standing, he huffs a little laugh, short and sharp, folding his arms across his chest and looking down at her with that stubborn tilt to his head that he knew had always driven Marian mad. "It doesn't matter to me."

His finger taps against his sleeve, and he looks away, further down the stairs and at the dark wall. "I wouldn't bother."
