irony

u walk up to someone u haven't seen in a few weeks and u give the standard "what's up, how're u doing man?" expecting "not much", "same ol'", "alright", "good"...but this person decides to tell u really how they're doing, which is good, it's a real point of engagement. they tell u they're down, depressed, been through some shit...death in the family, got dumped by the significant other, didn't get into the grad program they wanted to, feel like they're goin' nowhere in life, etc. etc. etc.

u sit there, trying to think of what to say...u're not very good with consoling words and u struggle...u rattle off a stream of the cliche/non-sensical variety..."yo...it'll be alright...don't worry about it too much...oh well, like, u know, life goes on...u can always apply next year again man...don't worry, i'll make u a bet u guys get back together..."

suddenly recognizing ur struggles, and the discomfort they have put u in, they begin to feel bad - in addition to the grief they had already told u about - and develop some kind of sympathy for your pathetic attempts at trying to fill the silence and awkwardness...they feel so badly for you, that they act like what you've said means a grain of salt to them...they're charmed, transformed...happy. "thanks for the words of encouragement...u know, i think u're right, thanks..."

u get up from the table feeling u deserve ur own television show - dr.phil style.

human, all too human.
