Free at last

Who: Miel, Zero, Ransom
Where: A small clearing in the woods, a mile from Landsdowne, 30 miles from Finaqua
When: January 25th, 12:00 (Please note the backdate)
What: Rescuing Zero

The plan had worked.  Miel was not fool enough to imagine there had been no mistakes.  One could never tell.  But each had played their part very well indeed.

It was too risky to do this at an inn, or in any immediately populated area.  There could be no risk of Zero being spotted.  So Mielwynn had made a Canvas tent that could accommodate four, made the canvass so it’s camouflage blended perfectly with the current woods and colors of the place they were now.  Off the beaten path, they would be safe enough.

She had down stuffed mattresses, an inch thick, to make sleep comfortable, and a dark lantern for when night fell.  Cold rations in a tightly sealed metal box had been placed in a hiding spot as well.  All of this had been attended to before they set out towards the palace.

Right now Ransom was on watch.  He had been told how much this was going to drain Miel, and if Zero was unconscious when she was done, they were placing their lives in Ransom’s hands.  She wasn’t thrilled with the idea of being helpless, but it was necessary to repay the life debt owed.

Miel set the prison orb in the center of one of the three mattresses.  Inside dark smoke seemed to shift on its own.

She also knew that time was in a state of flux within.  Zero could feel it’s passage, but his body was frozen in the moment he was placed inside.  He had not bled to death, nor had he healed.

The moment he was free his injuries would return to bleeding freely and his life might well be in danger.

Freeing him and healing him was going to take almost all of what was left of Mielwynn’s energy.

She had created two sets of loose cotton pants and shirts for Zero.  Even healed, he might suffer pain, so they were best.  She chose drab brown partly as added camouflage, but also because she wasn’t catering to him more than she had to and denying him his favorite black was a small bit of petty spite.

Taking a deep, steadying breath, Miel unwove the prison orb and set Zero free.

Between one blink and the next he would go from imprisonment in the orb to lying on a thin mattress in a tent.  He’d be bleeding freely once more, and all the pain would return to as it had been when the prison took him.
