Questioning a Snake - preparing to ride

Apr 24, 2008 19:48

Who:  Cain, Dave, Gabriel, Open (Ahamo?)
When: January 17th, midnight
Where: Guard Wing
What: Dealing with another mess

Cain was cleaned, changed into clothing nothing like his usual attire, and going through weapons stores when Dave found him.

Dave wasn’t happy about leaving Greg.  But Greg was perfectly fine now, and both of them understood there was a job to do.  They also knew the really big guards, no matter how skilled, would draw attention.  The group would be mostly those who could blend in by either being non-descript or by being very good at acting.

“Cain.  We have a possible lead.  Your boy, Gray, was seen going to the kitchen area.  That’s where Zero’s crew got in.  He had no reason to be there.”

Wyatt looked up.  “Where is he?”

“Interrogation room three.  I left him with three guards.  None of them any too happy about losing friends and comrades.”  So they’d likely rough the prick up a bit.  Dave was okay with that, even if Cain wouldn’t be.

“Just make sure they don’t kill him.” Cain spoke with little infliction.

Dave was genuinely scared for his friend and commander.  Cain would never condone beating a prisoner.  He was due process and rule of law all the way.  And the fact that his eyes weren’t so much empty as cold.  He didn’t care.  One way or the other.

Dave realized then that DG didn’t hold Cain’s heart, she WAS his heart.  Zero had just made Cain a million times more dangerous.   Dave Patterson shuddered.

“I also understand the Prince Consort is headed down here.” Dave informed his commander.  “likely demanding answers.”

“No.  He’d be up comforting the Queen.  I know what he wants.  Dave, make sure we have two or three women on this team.  Preferably ones who personally suffered at Longcoat hands.”  Simple, matter of fact.  No anger, no fear.  Nothing.

Dave knew perfectly well what Cain was saying.  He knew damn well what the older man realized and was preparing for.  But the coldness.  Cain wasn’t right.  He possibly wasn’t sound leadership, right now.  No.  If he’d been mad and railing and irrational he wouldn’t be qualified to lead this mission.  As much as this parody of his commander disturbed him to his core, he was exactly what was needed.
