What do you mean by "what sort of magic"?

It seems that magic varies greatly from world to world. Is it a magic everyone can use, or is it limited to a few, or is it just something that keeps everything functioning? Rituals, or words, or just a wave of the hands?

There are many types and systems of magic, each of which has its own rules and requirements. All, however, require the user to have some sort of innate aptitude or power.

So, it requires a natural born talent?

Of some kind. You couldn't paint what lies before you if you couldn't see, nor could you describe the texture of fabric without being able to touch it.

There was once innate ability... but now most rely on trial and error. There are those with abilities passed down from generation to generation.

That seems rather haphazard, doesn't it? There's something to be said for order.
