Canon history: Here.
AU history: Esmeralda was raised in the streets of Paris, as more and more gypsies migrated there. As they moved, her upbringing was complicated due to the clergy becoming concerned with the sudden amount of 'fortune tellers' and 'palm readers'. To the clergy, the gypsies were unholy and they were generalized as thieves. The lack of social trust began to take a toll, and they became impoverished. Esmeralda learned to dance from her fellow friends, and soon became quite the performer. She took to dancing on sidewalks and street corners to earn her living. As the social 'war' against the gypsies flourished, her funds became less and less, until she was hired to perform at Paris' main new years event; The Festival of Fools. During said festival, she'd caught the attention of the clergy (i.e. Frollo.), and was made a target. After living on the run, and behind the closed doors of Notre Dame, the only place she could call safe, she was handed a letter by a mysterious church-goer one evening. After reading it, and contemplating it, she decided to escape the cathedral with Quasimodo's help, to perhaps earn a better living in this new place she now calls home.
After leaving the Academy for the first time, Esmeralda went back home to the Court of Miracles. The people she held so dear had proved her greatest fear wrong, they'd been standing together and making the most of Frollo's departure. However, when the Mist rolled in after the New Year, Esmeralda helped keep her people calm, and kept them together. She also realized; she'd left her closest friends behind at the Academy. She wasted no time after the Mist's departure to get started on her way back.
Personality: Esmeralda is trusting and compassionate. She never fails to take a chance at something positive, nor does she discriminate against anything, or anyone, of any background or race. Her experiences growing up made her an understanding yet very cautious person, and incredibly street smart. Her upbringing also reflects off of her in several different ways, most notably her lack of shoes. An expert performer, she takes pride in what she does, and never asks for money or loans. She looks to help the needy and under appreciated. Beautiful and witty, she may come off as a seductive temptress, but her motives are never less than pure. She believes in the greater good, never what any higher power or authority tells you to do. She longs for freedom and the need to be social. She's often caught practicing dance routines. Esmeralda has an apparent like for children, and a want to have some one day. Her maternal instinct is strong, and she has a listening ear if someone has something that is troubling them.
Greatest Fear: Esmeralda's greatest fear would consist of being restrained, captured, or confined. Even being in a small place causes her to become somewhat claustrophobic, due to her time in the small passageways of the cathedral. She feels as though the walls are closing in on her, and gypsies don't do well behind stone walls.
Greatest Desire: Esmeralda is generally selfless when it comes to material belongings, but her greatest wish would be that her people were accepted into society again, and their burden was lifted from their shoulders.
Plans for your character: Esmeralda's coming back to help fight the Mist; she's seen what it's done first hand, and has realized she's left the most important people in her life behind to deal with it on their own. That simply won't do. Ever.

❦ Writing
Third person writing sample: The ground was cold beneath her feet, Esme wasn't sure it was the cold snow, or the fact the strangelings had littered the ground only days ago. Djali wasn't the same. She'd been nervous and shakey the past few days---Who hadn't?
She pulled her cloak and satchel closer around her. The goat nuzzled the back of her legs, urging her to move forward.
They were back on the island.
It felt more like returning home than...actually being home in Paris did.
They went through Traverse Town first, the place nearly desolate. People were missing, like the news said.
"Let's go warm up first." was the first suggestion. Djali bleated in agreement, and the two made their way into the Jovial Mouse Tavern.
Taking a brisk look around, it wasn't at all like most places in Paris; for one, it was a controlled environment.
Two, it felt familar. Something in the room was familiar, and she couldn't place it. She found a table to settle down at, pulling off her cloak and setting her things down. Not a lot--it never was. A busboy stopped by to ask if she needed anything. And she politely declined, merely a place to sit out of the cold for now. He nodded and didn't press, moving onto his next set of paying customers.
Djali occupied under the table as Esme sat and people watched. Found features and habits each person showed that reminded her of Clopin, Quasi, Phoebus---even Tulio. A small trio of young men displayed their talent on various instruments, ebbing out a tune that carried a beat, a beat fast enough to dance to. Her foot taps with the rhythm, mind still wandering about, questioning just what's so familiar about this teeny tiny bar.
It may be familiar, but something's wrong. Something's off---could it be everyone was just in here to drink away their sorrows from this past week?
She people watches a moment more, before Djali nudges her foot. Even Djali knows---she wants to dance.

First person writing sample: Good evening students! It's...me again. If you haven't met me before, I'm the dance teacher, Esmeralda. Plenty of new and old faces---I can't wait to meet all of you. I hope everyone didn't miss me too much.
[ Djali bleats in the background, Esme positions the camera so the goat is happily on screen. ]
That's Djali. She's excited to see everyone too.
[ The goat does a twirl before the camera comes on back to Esme with a concerned face. ]
Did...anything change while I was gone? Anything really important I should know about?
