I am in possession of a lens flare. Your logic is, therefore, invalid.

Early Life

Spock, a Vulcan-Human hybrid, is the son of Vulcan Ambassador Sarek (who is also a Vulcan scientist and diplomat) and the human school teacher Amanda Grayson. It is interesting to note that Spock was not carried conventionally through his term, as biologically, his mother’s womb would not have been compatible for his growth. A Vulcan’s blood is copper-based and a Human’s blood is iron-based; both elements are highly incompatible with each other. Most children of such hybrid reproductions are lost through miscarriages. It is only through scientific manipulation that Spock was seen to term.

Born in 2232 in the city of Shi’Kahr, Vulcan, Spock was raised mostly by his mother in his younger years with steady, but sometimes impassive rearing by his father as he grew older. He attended the Vulcan Institute of Technology where he was vigorously trained in philosophy, science, space science, mathematics, human anatomy, alien biology, and various physical offense and defense techniques, some of which included the mind meld, the Vulcan nerve pinch, energy manipulation and physical training.

During his years in the Institute, Spock was often a target of harassment from his schoolmates due to his mother’s origins. While they were previously unable to illicit an emotional response from him (the 35th attempt, by Spock’s counting), a slight against his father being a traitor for marrying “that human whore” brought about an impressive smackdown by Spock and a very defining conversation with his father regarding Spock’s status as a child of two worlds and his choice of path to take. His mother often argued with his father on the expectations of conduct placed on him, citing that Spock was not fully Vulcan and therefore, should not be expected to fully act like one.

After graduating from the Vulcan Institute of Technology, Spock applied to both the Vulcan Science Academy and the Starfleet Academy. He was offered entrance into the Vulcan Science Academy by the board council due to his outstanding performance despite his “disadvantage”. He was the first in history to reject the offer (and with attitudinal prejudice, as he assured the council that since he was half-human, their attendance record would fortunately be unblemished) once he received clarification that the council believed his mother’s blood to be the "disadvantage" in him.

Spock had considered completing his training in the Kolinahr, a Vulcan ritual in which all vestigial emotions are purged. The ritual takes place over the course of two to six years and is marked by the Vulcan’s journey towards pure logic. Obviously, Spock never completed that training.

Starfleet Academy

Spock graduated as one of Starfleet Academy’s most distinguished graduates in 2254, with a ridiculous amount of honors and awards to spare. This was the same year that he first programmed the Kobayashi Maru “no-win scenario” simulation test, meant to allow cadets to experience fear in the face of death, and in experiencing and accepting it, develop the right mindset for captaincy command. During his time at Starfleet, he specialized in computer programming (holding an A7 computer expert classification) and enlisted track toward science officer.

His decision to stay at the Starfleet Academy after completing his studies allowed him to be an overachieving nerd to attain the rank of commander by 2258 and become an instructor of advanced phonology and interspecies ethics. The Federation’s Three-Dimensional Chess Organization also awarded him the title “Grandmaster” during this time period. He excelled in the enjoyable game, his tactical strategy underlined heavily by logic. It is only when he plays against Captain James Kirk in the future that Spock sometimes loses, the human’s oftentimes illogical and erratic moves stumping Spock more than he would like to admit.

It was also during his teaching commission that he met Lieutenant Nyota Uhura, a promising communications cadet who served as his academy aide for his advanced phonology course. It is unclear as to when their relationship started.

It was when Spock confronted James T. Kirk with inserting a subroutine command into the Kobayashi Maru test that Spock first met Kirk. The two clashed at the trial held for Kirk’s academic dishonesty, showing immediate dislike for each other. It was here that they first exchanged a litany of words that highlighted their contrasting beliefs and viewpoints.

It was during the discipline hearing that Starfleet received a distress call from Vulcan.

USS Enterprise

Spock originally served as First Officer and science officer (serial number S 179-276 SP) under Captain Christopher Pike, along with other cast and crew and one illegal stowaway named Kirk. The two unsurprisingly clashed again while Spock demanded Kirk’s removal from the bridge (even going as far as offering to do it himself) and Kirk attempted to convince Pike that the distress call, given under similar conditions to when the U.S.S. Kelvin had been attacked the day he was born, was originating from an attack by Romulans.

Spock only relented when Kirk’s arguments were soundly and logically backed by Lieutenant Uhura’s deciphering of a Klingon attack report intercepted the night before. Kirk’s claims were further confirmed when upon arrival at the Vulcan air space, the Enterprise was immediately hurled headlong into the destruction debris of the rest of the fleet, in the process of being destroyed by the space mining vessel Narada. The Enterprise having experienced some technical difficulties (i.e.- Sulu forgetting to take off the parking brakes) had allowed time for Kirk’s warning to be delivered and for the ship to build some countermeasures before it engaged with the Romulan ship.

When the ship was finally hailed, it was revealed that the captain of the space ship attacking Vulcan was Nero, a man who claimed to know Spock though Spock did not reciprocate the acquaintance. Nero demanded the presence of the captain on the Narada for negotiations, a demand that was met with high opposition from both Kirk and Spock. However, their opinions were overridden by Captain Pike’s logical assessment that the drill the Narada was using to dig through Vulcan’s surface was jamming all their communication and transportation signals and would need to be destroyed. He assigned Spock to Acting Captain of the Enterprise (and Kirk to First Officer) and departed with Kirk, Sulu, and the guy in the red shirt who always dies Chief Engineer Olson, the three responsible for disabling the drill platform.

The platform was successfully disabled and all signaling functions returned to the Enterprise, but it was not enough to stop Nero from dropping an extraction of the red matter into the hole mined to the core of the Vulcan planet. The red matter, once it had reached the optimum heat source at the core of the planet, imploded upon itself and created the anomaly of a black hole, beginning the process of consuming the Vulcan planet within minutes.

In a bid to preserve his planet’s culture and history, Spock relinquished the conn to Sulu and beamed down outside of Shi’Kahr in order to retrieve the Vulcan council, the presence of which included his parents. It was as they were being beamed up by Chekov that the planet’s surface under Amanda Grayson’s feet crumbled, leaving a visibly distraught Spock reappearing in the transporter room with an outstretched arm but no mother. She had tumbled to her death moments before and was now a part of the six billion Vulcans who died with the destruction of the planet.

Spock internally struggled with the loss of his mother and Vulcan, striving to remain composed as he took control of the starship. His battle to suppress his emotions was marginally successful even through the comfort that Lieutenant Nyota Uhura offered him, an act that lent the impression of a possible personal relationship between them.

He also correctly surmised that the Narada originated from a future timeline traveling to the past, using Vulcan rationality to explain the presence of a far more technologically advanced offense system that the Narada used and the presence of the “black hole” technology. He also concluded that through the actions of the mining ship, they were all now a part of an alternate reality.

Deciding to adhere to Captain Pike’s orders before his departure from the Enterprise, Spock ordered the ship to depart for the Laurentian system to rendezvous with the rest of Starfleet, hoping that they would then be able to mount an effective defense against the Narada. Kirk naturally disagreed, citing that Pike had also ordered them to retrieve him when the time came. The passionate debate led to Kirk’s near mutiny, effectively and efficiently halted once Spock employed the Vulcan Nerve Pinch. In a bid to ensure that Kirk would have no further opportunities to complicate matters, Spock ordered him to be jettisoned in an escape pod onto Delta Vega, to be retrieved by Starfleet once they had returned.

It was when Spock acknowledged McCoy’s dedication of duty towards Starfleet instead of taking Kirk’s side (whom he was close friends with) and was rebuked by McCoy in return that Spock revealed he currently had no regrets for his actions, a far cry from an act Spock Prime would have taken. This moment further amplified how the actions of the Narada had affected their lives.

Spock was understandably surprised when Kirk appeared on the ‘at warp’ Enterprise, bringing an unidentified companion with him. He immediately demanded to know how Kirk had managed to beam aboard the ship while they were at warp, citing his position as Acting Captain to extract an answer. Kirk, having met a future version of his Spock on Delta Vega who traveled back in time with Nero, was now fully aware that he would have to emotionally compromise his own Spock. He unsuccessfully taunted and provoked Spock about the destruction of his planet and Nero’s role in it, his power struggle with the half-Vulcan continuing at full steam. The furious fight for dominance ended in Spock losing control of his inhibitions when Kirk topped the cake by disparaging Spock about his lack of love for his recently deceased mother, causing Spock to physically and mercilessly assault Kirk. If not for the timely intervention of Spock’s father Sarek, Spock would have succeeded in choking the life out of Kirk.

Spock resigned from command through McCoy (the Chief Medical Officer), citing Regulation 916 and that he had been emotionally compromised and was no longer fit to be captain. Having been promoted to First Officer by Pike before his departure, Kirk became Acting Captain. He immediately implemented his plan to retrieve Pike from the Narada and intercept Nero before he attacked Earth.

After resigning his acting captaincy, Spock retreated into the transporter room, the closest area to where he lost his mother. Angered and conflicted, Spock was adrift with indecision until his father arrived and comforted him, ensuring him that he was not fully Vulcan and that there was some pride to be derived from that. Embrace the best of both worlds was the suggestion his father made to him, a suggestion that was followed with the confirmation that he had married Spock’s mother not because it was logical but because he had truly loved her. The admission helped restore his balance like nothing else could.

Spock’s return to the bridge occurred during the command crew’s debate on how to board the Narada without detection, a feat made extremely difficult due to the Romulan ship’s superior detection and attack systems. Spock confirmed Pavel Chekov’s calculations to hide the Enterprise behind Titan, one of Saturn’s moons, allowing for the Enterprise to escape detection in its atmosphere and still be within transporting distance. He also volunteered for the active part of the mission, reasoning that his Vulcan heritage, culture and language was similar enough to the Romulans that he would be able to determine Pike’s whereabouts as well as a method for destroying the ship with more ease than anyone else on board. Kirk approved his request but on the condition that Kirk would accompany him.

Once on the Narada, Kirk and Spock acted in tandem like a complementary team. During a short phaser fight with the crew of the Narada, Kirk immobilized a crew member without needing instructions from Spock to do so, allowing Spock to mind meld with the fallen Romulan to determine the exact location of Captain Pike and the Jellyfish, the one-man ship that originally belonged to Spock Prime. Both boarding the Jellyfish, the computer system activated and confirmed him as Ambassador Spock (to Kirk’s exaggerated surprise), causing Spock to arrive at the correct conclusion that Kirk was withholding information from him. However, Kirk refused to elaborate even when he was confronted by Spock on the matter. In the interest of time, Spock agreed to take control of the Jellyfish.

After a short exchange of fire power inside the Narada, Spock escaped the ship with the Jellyfish and used it to destroy the drill platform hanging above the San Francisco Bay. He immediately warped to another part of the system, luring the Narada into pursuit and away from Earth. It was as Spock placed the Jellyfish in a collision course with the Narada to dispose of the red matter as well as destroy the mining ship that he (along with Kirk and Pike at a separate location) was transported back onto the Enterprise, the ship reappearing only moments before to combat the torpedoes that had been launched at Spock’s ship.

As a black hole began to form in the center of the Narada, Kirk offered assistance to her crew, an act that surprised Spock. Once Kirk explained that it was only logical to diplomatically hedge any objections the Romulan empire may have with the treatment of the Narada’s crew that he objected to the acting captain’s logical offer, insisting that it was highly inappropriate in the face of Nero’s actions.

However, Nero rejected Kirk’s offer, declaring that he would rather watch Romulan be destroyed again rather than accept the assistance. Kirk acknowledged, ordering the Narada to be fired upon. It was with that attack, along with the formation of the black hole, that Nero and his mining ship was finally destroyed.

There was no doubt that it was through the collective effort and courage of the bridge crew of the Enterprise that Spock was able to salvage the heritage of his planet, as well as somewhat coming to terms with his human side. It was through this revelation that he found his new home, his rightful place with the crew of the Enterprise.

After their return to Earth, Spock finally encountered his prime reality counterpart. It was through this meeting that he discovered Spock Prime’s desire for him to become better friends with James Kirk, to nurture the same relationship that Spock Prime had possessed with his own Kirk. He discovered that Kirk could become a crucial and defining part of his life, someone who would help define who he was. Spock Prime also urged Spock to discard his plans of resigning from Starfleet to assist in the re-colonization of the remaining Vulcans, explaining that Spock needed to put aside logic and do what felt right. He further reasoned that Spock did not need to lend his assistance to the Vulcan society as Spock Prime would readily take his place.

Once Kirk was assigned full command of the Enterprise by Starfleet, Spock offered his services as First Officer, with character references as needed. Kirk gladly accepted.

Of course, that was before he knew Spock would be on his case for just about everything.
