It's one thirty in the am, I'm sitting here listening to Against All Odds, and I won't even try to steer away from the fact that it is one of the songs I've heard most in my life (yes, other than the other two: no more by 3LW & complicated by Avril Lavigne, I will admit) and yet still it makes me unbearably sad every time I hear it. In English we were assigned to pick a cover song and identify why it's a good cover so I chose this one. I know it like the back of my hand; I can replay the whole thing over and over again in my head, even tho I wish I couldn't at times. I think Postals is better than Phil Collins because it doesn't sound like one of those singers in Las Vegas who leans on a piano, walks around winking at people, and slips in a "hey, how you doin there" as they sing to a piano accompanyment. Maybe I'm ballsy challenging classics, but this particular version really emphasizes the sadness of the situation. Although I can't help but wonder if I'm more biased because I relate to it. Anywho, I think I'm excited because now I don't feel so pathetic for sitting in my room listening to this song all the time last semester... well, maybe I do, but at least now it's useful ;p For those of you who don't know the emotional suicide (harsh term but true) of this song here you go:
"... you leave without a trace
when I stand here taking every breath with you
you're the only one who really knew me at all
so take a look at me now
there's just an empty space
there's nothing left here to remind me
just the memory of your face...
...I wish i could make you turn around
turn around and see me cry
there's so much i need to say to you
so many reasons why you're the only one
who really knew me at all
so take a look at me now."
Don't get me wrong, I had intended to write of rainbows, butterflys, bubble baths, and happier things but this is what's on my mind. So to sum things up I love this song and you should too.
