I have some good and some bad news.
My teacher got me a job interview with an ad agency - they called him up, asking him to recommend people for an Accounts Service job. Essentially, an accounts job in advertising means that you do a lot of organising, research, etc, because you're the liaison between the client and the creative team. You write up the creative brief which directs the creatives, and you get feedback from the client.
Well, I went in for that job interview last Thursday. I didn't get the gig, because the guy talked to me for a bit and said "you're more of a creative than an accounts type". We both agreed that if i did get a job in accounts then it would be a waste of both of our time, because I would be happy and would want to switch into creative as soon as I could, and he would have wasted time and energy training me. But we chatted for a bit, he recommended a few places that I should look into, and it was all good.
So that was the bad news.
The good news is that I got into the
2007 MADC mentorship program! Which is awesome, because ever since my friend Alex got in last year, and I've been dying to do it.
Earlier this year, students from the Swinburne and RMIT advertising courses submitted poster ads and ticket ideas for the MADC Bonza Bash - a night where people from Melbourne advertising agencies form bands and play rock music at The Espy, and everyone else from the agencies come and watch them play. (Also has free flowing beer all night - not bad for $30!). I submitted 3 ideas (one my teacher liked but I didn't, one we both liked, and one that I liked, but my teacher did. I submitted the last one straight to MADC and bypassed my teacher... sneaky!), so I'm not sure which one got me in - guess I'll find out soon though! 10 people from Swinburne and RMIT got through, and the winner out of the 10 of us gets to produce a poster which gets distributed to all the ad agencies in Melbourne - awesome!
But wow! It's such a great opportunity! *does happy fun dance* I'll be mentored by a guy from
WHYBIN/TBWA, (which apparently is one of the top 10 agencies in Australia). They've done some cool work worldwide for Whiskas, Pal, Apple iPod, Absolut Vodka, Playstation, etc, so it'll be great to get to network with some of the people who did those ads. I was so psyched about this last night when I found out - all squealy and huggy. Great fun!
I’ll find out more about this thing in a few weeks time. In the meantime though, here are the 3 ads I submitted - I still wonder which one got in. Guess which ones I liked and which ones my teacher liked :D
