[ History ] :
Here's a Wikipedia page on the plot... if this isn't enough I can also include a thing from my previous app that I typed up, if needed.

[ Personality ] :

To sum it up, Shing is very kind and optimistic to a fault. He's willing to give everyone he meets a chance, even hearing them out and trying to understand their lines of thought and why they did what they did. He truly believes that there is inherent good in everyone and that even the most vile people in the world can be redeemed, no matter how despicable their actions -- prime examples of this in-game include when Kohaku's aunt tossed him into a cave and sealed the exit, and even when he tried to get through to the final boss Creed in the end. His personal mantra is to save anyone and everyone who is in trouble and that if it's a beautiful woman in particular, save them even if it costs you your life. He's also very much interested in strong, open Spiria and the like, so he goes out of his way to help anyone in trouble and open up their Spiria. And as if he couldn't get any more Messiah-like, he absolutely refuses to kill anyone. Ever. Sure, it's fine to defeat them in combat, but killing them is a big no-no, especially if they're a Soma user -- in his world, killing them would destroy the Spiria. He's also endlessly optimistic, as mentioned earlier. His optimism and determination is infectious -- he doesn't give up on any goal, especially if he knows that it's doable. He's also naturally curious, though that can be attributed to being stuck in one place for so long.

Of course, he's not without his faults -- thanks to being in one place for so long, he's a bit simple-minded. Needless to say, he leaps before he looks, always going for the direct route to any and all problems and ignores strategies and tactics. His naive recklessness has led him to do a number of stupid things like head-on attacks, rushing into the girls' side of the hot springs when he learns there's an enemy in there, jumping off incredibly tall towers... the list goes on. He also tends to speak what's on his mind without much consideration, too -- his lack of tact generally leads him to say things that either make people really angry or make the situation really awkward, which only adds to the exasperation of his friends (a good example is his commentary on Chalcedny and Paraiba's relationship after freeing the latter from Zerom control). He also doesn't understand sexual innuendo at all. Seriously. He also tends to suffer from bouts of loneliness, thanks in part to essentially being orphaned by Creed and his machinations, as well as seeing how his companions have living family members to return to. However, he has the ability to be able to learn from his mistakes, and after the incident with Incarose and Creed doesn't allow his emotions to get the better of him. Even when he's feeling upset at someone or is generally depressed, he makes it a point to be open about it and is willing to discuss how he feels with other people.

So, in general? He can bring out the good in people, and can persuade them to change their ways and convince them they can do good deeds despite their past actions. While it may not work on people who are already too far gone to save, more often than not he can open their eyes and encourage them to possess a strong will and spirit -- Spiria -- like he has.

[ Strengths/Weaknesses ] :

Admittedly, when he was setting out on his journey Shing wasn't all that good at using his Soma (read: weaponry) too well. Having traveled the whole world and having stopped Creed from destroying the world, though? Yeah, don't underestimate him. While he may not know magic, and his defense can be a bit bad, Shing is a decent fighter and really strong -- he's fast; he strikes hard and can deal a lot of damage in a short amount of time. His Soma is directly connected to his emotional strength, which means that he's got a strong spirit, as the personality section explains. (For specific artes that Shing can pull off, I'll just refer you to his Artes page on the Tales Wikipedia.)

Emotionally, Shing is definitely more complex than one might think. On one end, he's endlessly optimistic, outgoing, and very determined. He's also willing to hear people out and talk to them about their feelings, which makes him the kind of person you'd want to have as a friend. On the other end, though, he's stupidly reckless, has his moments of naivety and lacks tact when it comes to speaking with others. Oh, also, innuendo. What is it.

[ Other Important Facts ] :

As touched upon in the Wiki link, "Spiria" in this world refers to a person's spirit or heart, and "Soma" is a special type of weapon that's powered by a person's will and emotions. Shing can use his Soma and Spiria together to form a Soma Link Laser, which is often used to locate people with Despir sickness (a type of illness that's caused by emotional problems and results in weird creatures called Zerom running amok in a person's heart -- no, really) or his nakama. This ability is also what allows him to Spir Link with people and allow him to see into their spirit.
