Trying to figure out what to do with King is like trying to figure out what to do with a demon killing demonic Hilter. Letting him roam free is not an option, which means Ruby needs to baby-sit. It's not her cup of tea.
"King!" she snaps with an exasperated sigh, banging her fist on the table hard enough to rattle.
"Touch it and I'll kill you."
He gives her a dry look. "Testy testy, Ruby baby, I was going for the book, not the knife."
"Please."
She's sure she's going to kill him before the day is through. Honestly. And she's sure she's going to enjoy it while she's doing it. Jude's hand on her shoulder is all that is keeping her from strangling him at the table. That and she doesn't want his dead body in her food.
They've been at this for too long, reading and snipping and King reaching too close to her knife. Jude pacing behind her and stopping every so often to look over her shoulder or curb her homicidal tendencies.
They're waiting, she knows, but she is a distinctly impatient creature and she doesn't enjoy waiting, much less in the presence of King.
When she feels Jude's finger tighten on her shoulder she looks up and is across the room in nearly no time at all, arms tangled up in a three person hug and her head buried in the chest of her newest saviors, the men who are going to baby-sit King for her.
Tilting her head back, she smiles up at the men holding her. One dark and quiet with a soft smile, the other bright and bubbly and grinning like she is.
"Ruby!!" the blond one says with a laugh, disentangling from the other and swinging her around slightly. She turns a little off balance when he puts her down and stumbles right into the arms of the other.
"Hey William," she says, leaning up on tiptoe to press a chaste kiss to his cheek.
(The other, Nicholas, is too good for just a kiss on the cheek; if she had needed to breathe she would have been breathless.)
She makes Jude leave the room as she speaks to them, soft undertones interrupted with telling King to shut up all too many times before Nicholas tells him to shut up and King actually does.
It's like a breath of fresh air and Ruby gives Nicholas a look of adoration he practically laps up before preening slightly in that way of his that makes Ruby and William roll their eyes. Oh Nicholas.
They leave with a promise and Nicholas escorts King to their car. No one she's known, besides William and Nicholas, have ever been able to control him.
"Thanks, William," she tells him as Jude steps back into the picture and as always, loops his arm around her shoulders. It's almost like the old times, only different.
William nods and smiles at Jude. "I'll take care of him," he promises and Ruby doesn't think to question him. She knows better, William is as faithful as they come.
She stops him as he's walking away and presses her palm to his cheek. "Don't go far."
He smiles and reaches up to cup her hand. "Never far."
