My travel diary

Jul 29, 2008 20:56

The irruptions of the forces of travel chaos erupted early, with the death of the iron on Sunday evening, partway through my ironing and before partner had even begun. We eventually disinterred an old travel iron, and after changing the plug, this served, if not very adequately - may be up to smoothing out the creases from packing, but that's really all.

Up at unmentionable hour, taxi arrived on time, got the preferred Gatwick Express, all checked in before 7.30 am. Flight delayed. (Though not by horrendous amounts. Still.)

Meal on plane consisted of some kind of cheese pasty and chocolate muffin (I only discovered the latter after taking a mouthful). Fortunately they also brought round plain bread rolls.

Arrival okay, taxi to hotel, checked in okay.

Lack of internetz in room, the cables did not work. Picked up a faint and intermittent wireless connection.

Pottered around the area (Pest, near the Opera).

Had dinner, and then faded out very early indeed.

Out today to Buda - walked across the Chain Bridge and took the funicular up to the ramparts bit. Wandered around, looked at the Matthias Church, walked about the area (found the House of the Red Hedgehog, there may eventually be photos of this and a few other things), and went to the National Gallery. Were not terribly impressed by the local artists.

Had lunch in rip-off tourist place by the Museum, walked around trying to find a way down the hill, hit several dead-ends but finally got there. Walked along the riverside as far as the next bridge

Reminded by several buildings along this walk of my Weird Dream Architecture, which has, however, been appearing since well before my previous visit here.

We decided it was too hot to climb the hill however splended the view, and crossed back into Pest.

It was hot. Very hot. Through all of this.

In several places the Odour of (perhaps) History rises extremely strongly.

Have been shown the place in hotel where I can get a decent wifi connection.

architecture, travel, weather, smells, cities, art, museums, dreams
