Clearing up the book maelstrom (there are still some books that don't fit on any shelves, but once I've made a pass or two through the shelved books for items that can go, maybe they'll fit) has not only revealed large areas of carpet we haven't seen for years, it's also brought back into the light of day vast amounts of personal documentation: and space in which to sort same, which has been sadly lacking. So I have been blithely disencumbering myself of vast amounts of obsolete paperwork and radically reducing the contents of my life administration files. Several bags went out in the recycling box, or rather, adjacent to it since they wouldn't fit inside.
(I haven't yet tackled any research-type files, though I'm sure there must be some things that could be ditched by now.)
Since a significant proportion of the no-longer needed paperwork is of the sort one is recommended not to chuck straight in the bin or the recycling box, we bought a shredder on Saturday. And I have been intermittently shredding stuff ever since: the motor cuts out every so often and demands a rest, and anyway, I do have other things to do (the editing of Belgian paper is coming along nicely, thanks) besides sitting and feeding things into the grinding maw.
But rather satisfactory, nevertheless.
