Because these are all about moi:
If you have less than 50 interests, pick every fifth one. If you have between 50 and 75 interests, pick every seventh one. If you have over 75 interests, pick every tenth one. If you have fewer than ten, pick all of 'em. List them on your LJ, and tell everyone exactly what it is about these things that interests you so much:
As I have 150 listed interests, I decided that every fifteenth one was quite a long enough list:
apostrophe
(the correct usage of) A poor much abused and misunderstood punctuation mark:
The Apostrophe Protection Society defends it.
Charlotte Yonge
Prolific and best-selling
Victorian writer. Her works reflect her small-c conservative Anglican view of the world, but place the experiences and moral struggles of women at the forefront. I much prefer her novels of contemporary life to her historical novels, which have dated much more.
Dr Johnson
Because who doesn't like him? Love what he does with the English language
G B Stern
Neglected early C20th writer of novels and memoirs (her 'ragbag chronicles' are almost a proto-blog). I write about her quite a bit. Have thoughts of trying to write a biography of her myself some day, because there is an intriguing opacity about her self-revelations
Jane Gaskell
Writer of gaudily gothic fantasies (the 'Atlan' sequence, set in a prehistory where Atlantis has not yet submerged, are probably her best) and some novels of contemporary life, very early to mid 60s just pre-feminism. Although as far as I know she's still alive, she hasn't written much for years. Sun Bubble, a novel set in contemporary London, was the first one for quite a while, and I don't think there's been anything since.
Marie Lloyd
Late C19th and early C20th very popular music hall star, who was able to infuse relatively innocuous lyrics with enormous amounts of innuendo. The most famous story told about her, though, is completely apocryphal: none of her known songs involved the phrase 'she walks among the cabbages and peas' although one of the music halls at which she was a regular feature did have to make a case for the renewal of its license after moral campaigners tried to get it revoked during the 1890s.
Noel Coward
Love many of the songs, and several of the plays. The wit, the language, the interplay of words and music, even if some of his songs do begin to sound a little samey.
Robin McKinley
Ever since first reading The Blue Sword on its first publication. Lovely books.
Suzy McKee Charnas
Ever since first reading Walk to the End of the World some time during the 1970s. Part of those days when there seemed to be more of this good solid feminist science-fiction coming along (though memory suggests that there was a fair amount of fairly ghastly stuff as well).
Working out
The gym 2-3 times a week, and currently yoga once a week. I'm not very good, but it does me good.
