What I read
There was a massive re-read of AJ Hall's Queen of Gondal saga - including I think a couple at least of episodes I'd missed, at least, I didn't have them on my Kobo.
Barbara Hambly, Scandal in Babylon (Silver Screen #1) (2021) - very good, not perhaps one of the absolutely top Hamblys, but that is a very high bar. While there is a certain similarity in set-up to Bride of the Rat God (must re-read!) it goes in different (non-paranormal) directions. Will certainly read any more in this series.
Peter Dickinson, The Lizard in the Cup (Jimmy Pibble #5) (1972), possibly a bit of its time? Doesn't really have quite the weird aslantness of some of the other Pibble novels.
Megan Abbott, The Turnout, which I'd slightly forgotten I'd pre-ordered and was due this week. Wasn't entirely sure I was in the frame of mind for this, but nonetheless found it compelling.
On the go
Lennie Goodings, A Bite of the Apple: Behind the Scenes at Virago Press - a certain air of, if not actual non-disclosure agreements about some of the tensions and shenanigans, that a degree of tactful discretion has been applied...Got a bit bogged down in a section where she was being rather gushingly fangirly over various Big Name Writers she got to meet, put it down and have rather let it lie. Will probably pick it up again, though.
Up next
Well, there's a new Literary Review.
Find ancient copy of Bride of the Rat God?
My attention has been drawn to another book on women writers of the late 50s/early 60s, and while it covers some of the same names as Angry Young Women, it's not a complete overlap. Maybe?
I also note that there is a new Marcia Muller Sharon McCone (#35!!) dropping at the weekend.
