In a response to a question on Ask a Manager about saying you're not on social media in a work environment where most people are, somebody makes the following response:
'plastering my life across the internet doesn’t appeal to me'.
Which made me think, o, really, who bloody cares? Nobody will notice. Given that people have to (I get the impression) work like crazy in order to get their follower-counts up in order to be 'influencers' (and try and score freebies on that ground, hah), I do not think having some presence on the internet is going to have all eyes on you all the time.
Plus, has this guy, who is in middle years, not heard of the concept of curating one's online presence? Doubtless there are some people who put it all out there, but there are others who do not, says the person whose FB timeline is largely devoted to adorable marsupials. (This makes the attempts at advertising Stuff to me even weirder, because this never bears any relationship to that demonstrable interest.)
I would have thought that my research interests were out there and searchable online - website, academia, rather inactive scholarly blog, etc - but recent requests for my scholarly attention have come via personal references from people I had contact with some while ago.
