Still are those pleasant voices, thy nightingales, awake...

A cetain amount of ou sont les neiges d'antan? evoked by the Livejournal Wake last night.
Without LJ, I would not be at present at Wiscon. I would not be posting on Dreamwidth. I would not have published a couple of my more or less academic contributions and I very much doubt that 3 sentences for 3 weeks for Dreamwidth would have turned into an ongoing fictional universe.
But the actual period during which LJ was A Significant Thing in my life was approx 6 years.
And I am sure I have remarked heretofore that just because something does not last, was a transient phenomenon, does not mean that it was not important and its impact not enduring.
But I still miss the ways it facilitated interactions and exchanges and the intensity there was then.
Which somehow intersects with the panels on Female Friendship and Found Families (I actually left the one on Platonic Relationship which seemed to be covering the same ground but somewhow not entirely coming together). Subsequent to which I have been thinking about those fictional and media depictions which have people in easy and frequent contact with one another, even if they are not cooped up together on a starship, or living or working together, and how little that seems to me to map to how human relationships are. Or maybe that is just me and living in a Big City.
Okay, maybe something could be done with running across acquaintances in the British Library, which really happened unusually often - while I daresay quite a lot of my acquaintance spends time in the BL, I wouldn't predict being there a) the same day and b) in the same ladies at the same time, e.g. And yet there they were.
Or maybe I am just really, really bad at that sort of thing and other people are constantly socialising with their group of besties?
Will concede that physical location and timezones make this not entirely practicable. but do not seem to be seeing even the more readily accessible very often.
Or, is hanging out on the internet the equivalent of the bar/coffee-ship/village post-office? This entry was originally posted at https://oursin.dreamwidth.org/2771102.html. Please comment there using OpenID. View
