What I read
Finished Will Do Magic for Small Change.
Read Sarah Tolmie, The Stone Boatmen (2014): exquisitely written, one could say that narrative was slow and meandering but I think that constitutes a deliberate choice as to where the emphasis falls and what is given importance. Also, subverts certain expectations of the arc of the plot. I daresay it would not be to everyone's taste, perhaps?
And that was actually all that I finished, though this was a week in which several periodicals arrived and were consumed.
On the go
Calloo-callay, Stella Gibbons, The Yellow Houses (unpublished at the time of her death, date of composition ?1970s, first publication 2016) is out and I'm still reading that. It's definitely in the later Gibbons fantastickal elements/magical realism mode, along with, well, realism.
Up next
There is a new M R Carey, Fellside. Or, if I fancy something just a leetle lighter, a new Zoe Chant in the Protection Inc sequence, Warrior Wolf.

*Actually the return was not quite as horrendous as I'd feared: but, having left it to pretty much the last moment I could justify to myself, in the light of previous sagas of no-taxi, very-late-taxi, and taxi-takes-a-massively-circuitous-route to get to the station, did not really want old academic acquaintance deciding that they needed a word before I rushed off. However, taxi came expeditiously, and, if a bit circuitous, got me to the station with a decent amount of leeway to get the really fast train. Also, no queue at taxi rank at other end.
Still a bit knackered though, which may be as much to do with rather longer meedja interview this pm than I was anticipating. This entry was originally posted at http://oursin.dreamwidth.org/2496694.html. Please comment there using OpenID. View
