The strange recurrences of fashion in naming

Dec 15, 2014 10:21

I will concede that one comes across a lot of unusual names given to infants of the present generation, some of which one imagined long lost in the mists of time and indeed, conveying, one had supposed, significant generational information themselves. (Just as certain names are dating to the 60s...)
Walking up the road this morning I passed two women with pushchairs, one of whom was referring to her little one by the name 'Mabel'.
This is a name which for me has enormous associations of fustiness - a name found not even in my parents' generation but the one before.
Not necessarily bad associations - I had an Aunt Mabel who was actually either a great-aunt or some kind of cousin who as a child I thought great fun - but just signifying a particular historical period.
But who knows, maybe this was the name of a beloved relation or admired literary character.
What next for the come-back? This entry was originally posted at http://oursin.dreamwidth.org/2200305.html. Please comment there using OpenID. View
