Another thing I've been brooding over about the
'let the children run wild and explore nature' question is thinking about that in the context of my
post about visiting the Museum of Childhood and this
image:
not to mention the rather ghastly plethora of toys clearly meant to induct the female child into the world of domesticity.
And whether talking about 'the child' erodes the gender question: how early were little girls expected to be 'mother's little helper' or 'little mother' looking after still younger children and how far did they have the freedom to roam idly?
