I was a bit eeeeuuuww about the suggestion in the Guardian section
on reducing one's carbon footprint on Tuesday about switching from wearing natural to manmade fibres:
[E]ach garment made from natural fibres has a typical greenhouse gas footprint more than 20 times its weight. Manmade fibres such as polyester are a better choice in terms of reducing emissions.
And although I was okay with the 'take a shower rather than a bath' I was a bit going yuk when it then went on to suggest a bowl of water and a sponge would be even better. (Why not let the natural oils build up on the skin and reduce the need for warm clothing in the winter, with the added benefit that no-one will come near and breathe germs over you?)
Then, thinking about it further, I was rather huh? because at least natural fibres come from renewable resources, which is surely not the case when talking
polyester?
Surely issues of sustainability ought also to be factored in?

And on
another issue of balance:
I'm still officially overweight, but you'd have to find something else to tease me about.... I am fitter than I have been for decades. I have buns of iron and only the smallest of man-boobs.... I am lucky enough to live in France, in the Vosges, with their silent forests and trout-filled lakes, and most days, if the thunderstorms hold off, I walk for at least four hours, or swim or mountain bike for two[emphasis mine]. Meanwhile, everyone I know back in Britain seems to be getting unhealthier by the day.
Hand me a large codfish, tattooed with the words 'Some of us have to earn a living and have a life'.
