We caught up with some of our friends for dinner last night and I chose Jimmy's, because I have never actually been. Pretty sure the majority of Canberrans have been there, because every time I walk past the place, it is almost always packed with people.
I booked a table for 6pm, and even though it is pretty early for most people, when we arrived, the place was already a third full. The service is surprisingly not like the typical unfriendly Chinese restaurant standard, our waitresses were quite friendly and they even smiled when they served us. Cooking time was also fast, it took us longer to decide what to order than it was for our orders to come to our table. The place was clean, you get a view of the kitchen and it looked clean too. I like it! :)
I didn't want to choose a dish, and I also had some cravings for fried rice, so I chose this Special Fried Rice. Sadly it didn't come with any Chinese sausages, though it did have good amount of prawns and BBQ pork pieces. It was also kinda a little too oily.
This was a plate of salt and pepper unshelled prawns - the batter was a little too thick for my liking, which took away the taste of the prawns itself. They also needed more salt and pepper. It wasn't too oily though. I didn't have too many of these.
This was beef pieces in plum sauce - I couldn't taste the plum flavour, it was very close to honey-tasting, so maybe they gave us the wrong thing? maybe? but the beef pieces were nice, I think they were fried, because they were crunchy :) I liked this one, which made E happy, because I ate some 'beef' - not sure how nutritional they were though :P
A nice spluttering hot plate of Mongolian beef - I also liked this, which is surprising, because I never used to like beef from Chinese restaurants. They always have weird texture, soft but not stringy like beef should be. This was a little too sweet compared to other Mongolian beef/lamb dishes I've had in the past, but when eaten with rice, they were delicious :) I think this was the first dish we finished off on the night.
This was crispy skin chicken - it was beautifully cooked. The chicken was nice and succulent, not dry at all. It was also nicely salted, I didn't need the extra salt they gave us. When eaten with the Mongolian beef or the beef plum, it was even tastier :) Simple but nice!
A nice big banana fritters, vanilla ice cream with chocolate topping. It has been aaaaaaages since I had banana fritters and I absolutely loved this. The banana was cooked well so that it is all gooey inside, but not oily at all! I have a weird aversion to vanilla ice cream at the moment, so I didn't have much of them, E was my hero of the night and ate them for me :P
E had their deep fried ice cream, but he said that the batter was too thick so it wasn't as good. I also found it weird that he didn't have any topping on his ice cream, even though it was offered.
All in all, I didn't mind Jimmy's. Not a massive fan of Chinese food in general, but I wouldn't say no to going back there again. I think the fact that it was clean and the service was okay were the winning points for me. Also, I didn't feel sick from eating too much oily food, so I take that as a good sign :) I had so much fun last night, it is always nice to catch up with close friends who you know you don't need to impress and just be yourselves ;)
The prices were also not bad at all, all the dishes above plus tea, a diet coke and another serve of the banana fritters for only $115. There were 5 of us last night, so each person only paid about $23 - and we were all stuffed! They also didn't charge us for takeaway boxes, I hate it when restaurants charge. Like seriously, how expensive are they to get? I did feel a little rushed towards the end though, mainly they started serving a plate of cut up oranges. They did obviously still served us our desserts when we ordered, but even before I finished my fritters, they gave us our bill. It could be due the fact that what seems like half of Canberra was queuing for a table by the door and outside! :P
