Sometimes I think that I'm the only one who has noticed that the Simpsons has been in steady decline for almost ten years. That the decline was sharp and then steady is also something I don't seem to hear talked about much.
I own five seasons of the show on DVD and I loved those years. I still quote from those episodes fairly regularly with friends.
The show sucks. The movie of course sucks because the show sucks and has for years. I can't even begin to imagine that the people seeing it either are purposefully ignoring the fact that it sucks or they just love the show so much from its days of past glory that they ignore future input. It's like the people who think Bush is a conservative. You thought it was true years ago and all the evidence to the contrary now won't change your mind regardless of the enormity of the evidence in front of you.
A major reason why the show is so bad now is that it abandoned its core which was that there was a family who loved each other and was trying to get by. That was always the center of the show. Recall the episode where Homer goes to college and decides to set a good example for Bart by working hard (for him that was passing) after initially breaking the rules and cheating to give himself an A in the course he needed to pass to keep his job. The episode is filled with crazy stuff to be sure and people do get hurt for no reason (recall that Homer was bitten by a pig he was torturing by playing with its tail) but it returned to this state where they still loved each other and wanted to do right by one another.
Also, the jokes aren't funny. They're cliche, mean, absurd to the point of self-mockery (if they were only that smart) and just plain boring.
Contrast that with the episodes that I can recall from the current era. All I see is crazy stuff happening and people acting without remorse or any kind of regard to the fact that this is a family in theory and not a sketch comedy show where the characters don't matter beyond their usefulness to the joke. Why are all the celebrities on the show now so current? Tom Brady? Why was he on the show? Because he's popular and people will turn on the show just to see what that's all about. I'm glad that I didn't because I knew what was in store for me if I did.
The movie is well over 80% fresh on rotten tomatoes and that just scares me. I'm never going to see it. I can't imagine why anyone would.
