Iron Deficient?

May 04, 2011 10:35

I went for the second round of the Picky Eaters Group last night at the QA and got some more good information. There are a few new ideas I will try, such as food chaining/shaping (slowly altering an accepted food into a new food). One topic that came up is that iron deficiency anemia is extremely common in children whom are particularly picky ( Read more... )

Did he ever get checked for his hearing? In the picture he looks zoned out like some of the kids in my hospital who had hearing problems. That would also explain some of the learning and attention problems.

No, hearing hasn't been formally checked yet. He seems to hear fine though, unless he's like that 'in the zone'. But once you call his name he seems to hear and snap back into it... I think that if he gets enrolled in the Early Intervention Program they will check his hearing as part of the initial evaluation.

I remember you saying that one of your fears of having a child is that you might end up with a boy with ADHD and other difficulties like your step-son... I had the same fears, and here I am... Just noticed that irony. I can't say I'd trade it for anything now that I have the child here that I love to bits, but I can appreciate your perspective even more now! How is your step son doing these days?

The book is worth checking out. Our library had multiple copies-- be sure to get the latest version though. Pretty simple concepts, but once you put it into practice, pretty effective. Written simply, but intelligently. I especially like the reminder to the parents to not talk too much and not to get too emtional when having to discipline!

Is there anything he will eat that can be cooked in a frying pan or in anything cast iron? It is a fact that you can get all the iron you need by using iron cookware! It's why I try to use an iron skillet twice a week.

They make cornbread pans and muffin pans from iron, as well, but the skillet or a griddle is best. Does he eat pancakes? That would be your ticket...

We don't have one of those pans currently, but that'd be easy enough to fix. He will eat pancakes, so we could make those in a cast iron pan. Will talk to my chef (Kyle) about finding one!

FWIW Marissa is just like Rylan in the gapping out thing and her iron levels are fine (tested in april) I suppose that's not what you want to hear given she's being assessed for autism but there are other causes!
