his fingers are locked too heavily around the microphone. sungyeol doesn't have much of a habit for cracking his knuckles, but he wants to the minute he realizes that he's not as up for the challenge as he once thought he was.
this is not his area of expertise, this is not his forté, this is not something he's experienced in. no matter how he labels it, he knows the heaviness that settles in the pits of his abdomen well-he's nervous. boundless confidence only takes place in spaces he knows he'll excel in, like making fun of himself or in the (pretend) privacy of his home and around the other members. this is nowhere near a typical variety show. he can remember the feeling of being one of the last put into infinite, but he feels lucky for being able to join on such whim. however, liking singing and being good at it are two completely different things, he knows.
when the music starts, he stares into the camera. this is the price for air time, and he glances back at sunggyu before having to turn around.
sunggyu, no matter how quiet or blunt he comes off as, realizes that sungyeol's singing isn't the greatest. it's not that sungyeol is awful at singing, but he's no woohyun. while sunggyu sways along to the rhythm, he mouths the words to himself.
he thinks sungyeol will need him-and he's right. the first time he catches a glimpse of the unsurity across the younger male's features, he ignores it; not because sunggyu has always been a tough love leader, but because he knows that somewhere inside, sungyeol can actually do this.
the second time they meet eyes, he nods his head in approval. the third time they meet eyes, he offers a small cheer. something warm spreads through his body when he hears the stronger, though still faint, conviction in sungyeol's voice.
even if one of the notes goes off awkwardly and sungyeol looks at him with a slight panic in his eyes, sunggyu believes in him.
everyone is a part of infinite for a reason, after all, and sungyeol is no exception.
