my life is basically complete now.
why, you may ask?
carling why is your life so complete and wonderful right now
well, darlings, it is amazing because i can now do handstands.
this may not seem like a big deal to anybody in the world but me,
but i have been trying to do handstands for basically my entire life.
and after a solid 18 years and like 7 or 8 months of unsuccessful handstands,
i have finally learned how.
it seriously is pretty amazing.
let's see, other news in my life...
right now i'm reading this book called Egalias dotre but an o with a line through it, which in english is Egalia's Daughters. i'm reading it for my social change in scandinavian literature class.
it's really weird. it's from 1977, and i think it's about feminism. anyway, the entire book is written with all the most extreme and absurd sexual stereotypes completely reversed. the women are the breadwinners and they use men for sex. oh, and as far as vocabulary goes (and i find this a little annoying, to be honest) women are "wim" or "wom" for singular and men are "menwim" or "manwom" and everything you can possibly think of that could possibly be switched (hysterics, for example, gets turned into testerics) is switched. i'm not going to lie, i find it a little irritating.
i know that the point is to illustrate the absurdity of language being completely male-based, but for someone who has a hard time assigning myself a gender role, the entire issue of "sexist language" is something of a moot point. i really don't see how using "him" or "her" in every instance needed is sexist. okay, hysteria, yes, i can see that, and semester, i guess i can understand that. but i mean, to go in and reformat language completely just so nobody's offended? it just seems a little absurd to me.
i know, i know, language is not static, it's always changing, blah blah blah. it's just not a priority for me.
some of the points in the book are pretty excellent, though. the language thing bothers me, yes, because it makes it a slower read, but the actual content is pretty excellent.
the story revolves around petronius, a young manwom (god, that is so annoying) who is everything i consider attractive: tall, thin, muscular. however, in egalia, the fictitious country where the story takes place, the standard for mafele (male) beauty is the fatter the better, and menwim should be weak and docile.
it gives an interesting perspective, especially given the temporal context. i don't know, i think it's cool. other than the language thing. which irritates me. but the ideas are good.
i don't know, i'll get back to you when i finish it about whether or not it's worth the read. right now i'm tentatively saying yes it is, but, we shall see.
it is now time for the radio, so get listening, babycakes.
