Buuuuuuuuut... I found some stuff about Wedding Wars on A&E! *bounce* Now there is this
first page, but they have more material that is available for members of the
A&E club only, but I have copy/pasted the Feature about it - behind the cut, beware of spoilers though nothing extreme:
Wedding Wars addresses a serious issue-gay marriage-with a smile
The best “message movies,” producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron believe, are ones that don’t remind you of swallowing medicine while you watch them.
That’s why the prolific filmmaking duo-whose credits include the Oscar-winning Chicago, as well as seven Emmy-nominated movies and miniseries-wanted a light touch in the making of Wedding Wars, an A&E Original Movie about gay marriage.
“Stephen Sondheim [the celebrated composer and lyricist] once said to us that his idea of a perfect piece would be to have an audience laughing and laughing and laughing their heads off-and then have them go home and not be able to sleep,” Zadan says. “There is something to the idea of being very entertained and then, when you have finished watching it, you start to think about it.”
Wedding Wars, which stars John Stamos, Eric Dane, Bonnie Somerville, Sean Maher, and James Brolin, certainly accomplishes that objective. The comedy manages to stay as light as a soufflé, even when the material turns topical.
Zadan says that the cast and crew were aiming for something in the vein of In & Out, the 1997 audience-pleaser starring Kevin Kline as a straight man who begins to question his sexuality. “This is a wonderful opportunity to take on political subject matter and social subject matter in that fun, entertaining, comic way,” he says, “rather than standing on a soapbox and preaching.”
Adds Meron: “Gay marriage is such a hot-button issue. To do something [heavy-handed] may be pouring salt in a wound. It’s better to get your message out when people don’t know they’re getting one.”
Wedding Wars premieres on A&E on Monday, December 11 at 9pm/8C.
The premise: Shel, a gay party-planner (played by Stamos), is hired to arrange the lavish wedding of his brother (Dane) and a governor’s daughter (Somerville). Everything is proceeding beautifully until the governor (Brolin) takes a campaign stance against gay marriage. Outraged, Shel goes on strike. Before long, gays and lesbians nationwide join his crusade-and soon, not just the wedding, but all of America, is crippled by a massive work stoppage.
“That’s the fun thing about the movie,” director Jim Fall says, “the premise of ‘What if?’. If everyone who supported gay marriage went on strike, a lot of things would grind to a halt.”
“There wouldn’t be Broadway shows,” Meron suggests. “The movie industry [would falter].”
“And not just those things,” Stamos chimes in, “but also mail and airlines, et cetera, et cetera.”
“Mayhem and chaos,” adds Delia Fine, A&E’s executive producer.
To bring this story to life, Zadan and Meron reached out to a number of old friends. The duo had worked with Stamos as producing partners of the Emmy-nominated The Beach Boys: An American Family (2000) and Martin and Lewis (2002). Stamos had also had a supporting role in The Reagans, the 2003 miniseries that starred Brolin as the iconic president. Even Dane had worked with Zadan and Meron before; he played Glenn Close’s son in the 1995 TV movie Serving in Silence: The Margarethe Cammermeyer Story. “It was kind of like old-home week,” Meron says.
And just in case anybody is wondering, no, it honestly never occurred to the producers to cast a gay actor instead of Stamos in the leading role. “When we have movies, we bring in every single actor or think about every single actor who’s right for the part,” Zadan says. “We thought John would be great.”
Besides, Zadan jokingly adds, “John lied to us [about his sexuality to get the part]. We only found out halfway through the shoot.”
Even though Wedding Wars isn’t overly preachy, Fine recognizes that some viewers, particularly those staunchly opposed to gay marriage, will be challenged by the film’s point of view. “This is an issue that people respond to very viscerally and very emotionally,” she says. “I would expect that it will probably be a mixed response, just as the issue gets a mixed response.”
But Brolin, like all of his colleagues, isn’t afraid of controversy. “The worst thing that can happen to a film is apathy,” he says. “It doesn’t matter whether you hate it or love it, as long as you’re attached to it.”
