As location for Rivendell served the gorgeous forests of Kaitoke Regional Park, near Upper Hutt.
The footage taken on location, together with studio footage, miniatures, computer animated characters and matte paintings (and sometimes all at the same time, masterfully blended into one), re-created
the magical place called Rivendell:

Rivendell
A magical setting
The spot now known as Rivendell at Kaitoke Regional Park was a significant location site for the filming of the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Also known as Imladris, Rivendell was built as a refuge and rallying place for elves.
Although there are no physical reminders of the filming activity, Rivendell is a flat grassy and sheltered area, surrounded by beautiful native bush. It is only a few steps away from the Pakuratahi Forks carpark, so is an ideal picnic spot for all the family. Shallow river swimming and beautiful bush walks are very close to hand, while the campground is a 20 minute walk away.
To get to Rivendell just follow the directional signs from the park entrance. Or see the blue box on the right of the screen for companies licensed to run guided tours there.
