I really don't think it is the bed that makes the room look adult, unless you have a bunkbed or something. ;) In my first apartment, I had a single bed even if I had a boyfriend staying over five nights/week. It worked perfectly. Good luck! :)
It can be done! My roommate and I flipped a coin for the bigger room in our apartment. I won, so I got a full bed and have been single ever since. She got a day bed (the "wrought-iron" one with curly-cues from IKEA) and her boyfriend spent frequent nights over (and now they live together and me and my bed are back at home with Mom and Dad!)
She never tried the whole "a day bed doubles as a couch!" thing, which I think is difficult to pull off and can actually wind up making the bed look a bit childish, or "pretend" grown-up. She always made it up and it simply looked neat and tidy and left space for more creative items than a bed to take the focus of her room.

& regarding the issue of having boyfriends over, it's a lot easier to get a decent sleep in a single bed if you have a smaller boyfriend like I do.
