Purple Explosion?

While I've been gone all year (I go to university in England but am originally from America; my English room this year is posted here), my parents decided my room has gotten to the point of unacceptability and have repainted it and generally re-organized my stuff a bit, which was very nice of them...they probably realized I was never going to do it myself, and the walls were in really bad shape from years of putting up and taking down posters with various forms of adhesive.
The walls are now a very light lavender color (apparently, I'll see it for the first time on Saturday). My mom picked up a bedding set at a crazy steal, and based on the poor-quality photo of the photo on the bag of it she emailed me, it's cute, but I think it's WAY too much lavender, and perhaps a little more teenagery than I was expecting (I'm going to be 21 this year, and this room project is meant to mature the place).
So this is what the bedding looks like, apparently. I know the photo is bad, but it's about the best I can do for now:
As far as I can tell, this means the main color of the bedding (the comforter and the sheets) is the same exact color as the wall, which to me sounds like a huge no-no. My mom doesn't seem concerned about it, and she generally has great interior design taste, but I just think it's going to be way too much purple. And while I like the flowers and the bedding...I was thinking something plainer and more adult.
Since the entire set (sheets, comforter, shams, bed skirt, and two throw pillows) was only $30, my proposal is to keep the set, but get a cheap grey duvet cover from IKEA etc to put over the comforter, which would still be cheaper than finding an entirely new set. I think that will tone down the color and mature it a bit, and then I can keep the pillows and bed skirt the same two shades of purple that are in this picture. There are a few grey duvets that I like as far as I can tell from IKEA's website, and also some black and white geometric ones.
Does that sound like it would help? I just don't want my room to be a purple explosion, and I was thinking grey bedding with a royal purple pillow or two from the beginning before my mom found this set. If it helps, all of my furniture in the room is white, the carpet is a light blue, and the walls are now basically the same color as the lavender in this picture.

EDIT: My mom told me last night that she took the stuff out of the bag ( we agreed to keep it and experiment with duvets etc.) and noticed that the comforter is reversible and the back side is the darker purple with a sort of Indian henna design on it! I think that might be better, but I have this grey idea on the brain. We'll see...I'll probably post pics of all three options when I get home :)
