Hello!

Apr 03, 2010 01:46

This is the bedroom of my student house at college. I'm up in the attic, which is the best room because the view out of the window is mainly tree branches instead of the road.

Up until now, my bedroom had the same Kenyan theme since fifth grade. We moved several times since then, but keeping the same furniture and decoration helped make an unfamiliar place feel like home.

I was ready for a change when my parents moved to Boston this summer, though, so I used this community for ideas and reference photos when putting together my new room. Here are the photos, and thanks for the inspiration!

I have a very narrow doorway.

Working around the attic ceilings was kind of a pain. I had to figure out a layout that didn't block off access to anything, which is rather difficult in such a small, slanty room where dressers and other tall things have very limited options.

I ended up putting my bed smack in the middle and pushing all the other furniture against the wall. It works fine for me because I am small and don't need much room, but my poor tall boyfriend barely fits. What little floorspace there is left is cut off overhead by the attic ceilings, so he's always hitting his head on something... But he shouldn't complain, because he's the reason I didn't downgrade to a twin-size bed in the first place. :P

My desk is a bit too small for an art student. :P I'm constantly battling for table space with my engineer roommates downstairs. Who would have thought textbooks could take up so much space?

Oh yeah, and my chair is kind of hilarious. I traded in the one that better matches the desk for a chair with no arms so I could use it to practice cello. It's left over from my sister's elementary school purple phase. (Actually her purple phase is her entire life. But at least now walking into her room isn't like getting punched in the face by a lavender paint can.)

The view back through the door. The green box is for random papers that would otherwise sit around in piles.

You can't tell in this photo, but my closet clothes rod is amazingly ghetto. We shoved it in at a not-quite-correct angle using the holes that were already there. Actually, the door and the closet wall are both on a slant, too...

The dresser was my grandmother's. My mom hates it because it's old and creaky and she likes to throw things out. I think it has character.

This corner was much less crowded before I put my cello there. Also the yoga mat where random clothes go.

Here's a photo from when I first moved in for comparison. (Ew, ugly air conditioner! But it's so necessary during the hot DC summer...)

Now for a few closeups:

My parents sent this get-well card when I broke my arm last semester. Isn't it adorable?

And here's me! Thanks for looking.
