We arrived in Sukhothai yesterday afternoon after a squishy but not entirely bad bustrip in a tin can bus with fans on the roof. The trip only took an hour and most of the way there was plenty of spectacular scenery to keep us occupied.. Thailand is so green at times that it is almost fluorescent!
A tuk tuk driver bullied us into his tuk tuk by saying that the guesthouse we wanted to stay in only had one room left, we didnt believe him but it turns out that he was telling the truth! (wonders will never cease!) JJ's Guesthouse was recommended to us by the lady who owns the U.P Guesthouse in Ayuthaya, the room they had left was BEAUTIFUL! It was also the most expensive room they had. The owner told us that it was 500 Baht per night and we ummed and ahhed for about ten minutes before remembering that 500 Baht is less than $17 Australian dollars. We took the room with the intention of moving to a cheaper room as soon as one became available but then decided just to splurge and enjoy the luxury of it all. We had our first hot shower in over a month today and last night we watched tv.. nothing was on but we watched it just for the novelty of it all. We have a mini bar which means no warm water no matter how long ago we bought it! Isn't it funny the things that become luxuries? Anyway the room is beautiful and so clean and the bed is huge and comfortable and there is a balcony made out of polished teak with seats looking into the garden.. after our room in Phitsanulok we feel like royalty!
Sukhothai is a lovely quiet little town, it used to be the capital of Thailand and the old section of town is filled with ruins of old temples and palaces, we havent been there yet but we plan on having a day trip out there tomorrow or the next day. There is also another caving tour that we would like to do (hopefully no spiders this time) in one of the National Parks nearby, not sure how much that one is yet though.
We got an email back from the director of the school we were telling you about in our last post inviting us to visit the school. He told us that the cost of sponsoring one of the kids there ranges from 300 - 500 baht per month (that is $120 - $200 AUD for the whole YEAR!) so we are definently going to do that, even if we arent able to help out around the school. We may also give a general donation as well so the school can buy bedding and stuff like that, the director said that donations of those things are welcome but I figure if we buy them then we will end up paying more than if the school buys them (we arent great at the whole bargaining thing!). So once we are done here we will be heading up that way to see the school and meet the director and see if there is anything we can do in the weeks we are there. I am looking forward to it.
Still no news on the camera, the computers here don't have a USB so we arent able to plug in and see if we can get it working. Will have to give it another try another day. Oh well, we are going back to our luxurious room.. we may as well make the most of it while we can!!
