Original canon background:
Gregory Carson Harris was born in London and raised by his father Christopher Harris, Detective Chief Inspector in the police department. His mother, from all accounts, left when he was very young and in a picture of dysfunctionality, Christopher maintains that he's still married to her but just separated. When Greg was in primary school, he was sent to live with his father's sister and her husband outside of the city due to Christopher's work challenges and inability to deal with both his job and his son. He stayed with them for two years where he both witnessed and was subjected to his uncle's tastes, which is aunt had kept very secret and had been too afraid of what might happen if she hinted to if she hadn't accepted Greg into her home. But it was Greg's presence that gave her the courage to admit what was happening to Christopher who brought Greg home and helped his sister leave her husband.
He's never discussed what happened with his father and their relationship still remained as distant as before. Christopher wasn't sure how to deal with a child but Greg was independent enough to figure out how to stand on his own early on. He found popularity in the school in London and as he grew into a teenager, focused his attention on girls. He was active in school, maintained good grades, took extra courses, played sports and participated in the Army's Cadet corps, at the suggestion of his father. When he was 16, having already gained significant experience in the area, Greg had an affair with his music teacher whom he thought he loved. Christopher once again came to his aid when it got out of control, when the power struggle was evident, and finally saw his son as a troubled young man, not the perfect student he was attempting to achieve. It helped to repair some of their relationship.
Greg applied to several universities, including Oxford, and could have had his choice to go there but ultimately chose to attend the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. Growing up with an officer of the law as a parent, Greg was used to guns and seemed to thrive in the controlled and disciplined environment even if he showed it by rebelling at times. At Sandhurst, he met Daniel Kingston, the ace of spades who would become a livelong friend, as well as Harry Richmond, ace of diamonds and a lifelong enemy. The fourth among them was a man named Ian who was the ace of hearts.
The four of them didn't always serve together, but Greg and Daniel managed to stick together. They complimented each other--Daniel, while intelligent and calculating, was the driving force and the brute strength and Greg, fully capable of being the hero in combat, worked better behind the scenes, stealthy and careful. He was also a strong negotiator. Greg was charming and had a quick wit, making him both dangerous to his side and the enemy. As such, Greg and Daniel were a nearly unstoppable team except when it came to their good friend Harry.
Harry's betrayal and Ian's death saw the end of Greg and Daniel's service and their recruitment by the mysterious figure, the Old Man. Daniel and the Old Man had a history but having Greg come aboard was really the icing on the cake. His skills that he'd relied on in the military became his best strengths. He wasn't an asset like Daniel, but Greg was more than capable on his own, which meant that the Old Man tolerated all of the sleeping around he did.
He's an unapologetic womanizer, a charmer, a practiced thief and knowing all of that, as soon as he flashes that smile, all of the target's defenses go out the window. The Old Man focuses his operatives in certain hot spots and sectors of the world where he needs intelligence and Greg's specialty is Asia. He has various contacts all over the world, speaks several languages in the Asian family including Mandarin and is used more for intelligence than hits. Greg is still more of a lover than a killer. However, the time with his uncle left him with a hatred of powerful or brutal men, including some hatred directed at himself for it, so he is more than capable of becoming the thing he hates.
