When Cedric leaves his body, he thinks that he has gone to some sort of afterlife. Then, he sees his parents sitting together at the dinner table, sullen and quiet, and he knows he hasn't died.
Cedric stays in his house the first few days and wonders why he came back as a ghost. He has no recollection of the time between his two consciousnesses, and he can't seem to recall an urgent desire for life before he was killed. He thinks that he must have a purpose for returning to the living world, however, because not everyone comes back.
He tries to touch his parents and soothe them, tell them he's still here, but they can't see him, and he doesn't understand why. Cedric tries to touch his former possessions, but his hand phases through them the same way it passes through his parents everytime he tries to touch them, and he thinks he should know better than try to touch because hasn't he seen the Hogwarts ghosts pass through everything?
Cedric leaves after a few days because he can't bear being in his house. He can't withstand the torment of past memories and his parents not being able to see him, and he drifts aimlessly.
Cedric stops when he reaches a small flat in Diagon Alley. He doesn't know why, but he peers into the window and sees a red head looking down at some long document. Cedric instantly knows it's Percy.
He passes through the window effortlessly and sits on the bed, which is beside the desk, watching Percy work. He wonders why Percy isn't at the Burrow, and Cedric's heart aches at seeing Percy work so hard, but he doesn't know why or even if he should.
Cedric stays and observes Percy, who doesn't see him, either. He sometimes cries at night, face buried into his pillow, and Cedric thinks that Percy probably misses his family. Who else would he miss?
Then, one day, he hears Percy moan his name as he strokes himself under the covers, and Cedric stares at him with wide eyes. All of a sudden, his mind fills with images of the two of them, and when Percy finishes, crying, Cedric cries with him.
The next day, when Percy awakens, he stares at Cedric with horrified fascination, and when Percy croaks, "Cedric...?", Cedric doesn't dare believe that Percy can see him. But Percy gets out of bed and walks to him unsteadily, and when his fingers go through Cedric's cheek, Cedric thinks that it may have been better when Percy couldn't see him.
When Cedric says Percy's name, Percy takes a step back and stares at him with wide eyes, and Cedric thinks that maybe he should have died after all. He thinks that he came back for Percy, and he thinks that now, he'll never have Percy again.
