OK. I'm eating my words, since I wrote this just a few days ago: and then you see those same people getting their systems hopelessly broken by running bleeding-edge code which hasn't been properly debugged or tested yet
my own damn fault, right? but Ubuntu hoary is the current stable release. Bugs like this shouldn't even be there anymore.
I've really liked ubuntu up to now, but it really makes me wonder how committed they are to hardware support. I will say that automatic hardware detection rocks....mostly. For those of us who have to use ndiswrapper to get our wlan working, ubuntu is a lot less fun. Yes, ndiswrapper is now on the hoary install CD: this is progress. But it's not something that people really seem to want to talk about on the forums or #ubuntu on freenode, either.
The hardcore *nix response is to buy compatible hardware, dummy. Well, fine. But I'd like to be able to use the hardware that I already have, which was already known to work with an earlier version of my distribution.
