On-street bike lanes in Fairfax

Cyclists'-eye-view of University Drive, heading north--an ideal place for on-street bike lanes. The minivan on the left has just overtaken me on my bicycle safely, with plenty of space. I can ride outside the "door zone" of the parked cars without any trouble at all.

Ideally, the bike lane would be just to the left of the "door zone." That's plenty of space for all road users--cars can overtake slow cyclists safely, and cyclists will be encouraged not to weave through parked cars.

Bike lanes here make even more sense when you realize that the city will close University Drive to through automotive traffic once it completes the new George Mason Boulevard. Proper bike lanes would encourage students who live on-campus at Mason to cycle into town, rather than drive out of it, to run errands.
