When I'm browsing through youtube videos of a favourite character or another, and inevitably there will be arguments of "were they gay/were they not gay" in the comments. Inevitably, these will be polarizing arguments. Inevitably, also, the detractors are just utterly convinced that there would have been officially-kept records of, say, two guys

That said - seriously? Records? Why, throughout a history that is largely unaccepting of two men or women sleeping together, would anyone want to keep records of something that might get them put in jail or worse? And you know even if there were records it wouldn't be "official" to these commenters unless the historical figure clearly checked off a box that said "gay" or some such nonsense.

I KNOW, RIGHT? Considering a lot of the historical people I'm interested in had some power interest going on, it's really unlikely that even if something did happen, they'd want to be handing potential opponents ammunition (unless the culture in question was accepting, but even then, risk it). I absolutely hate the fact that no matter what tactic you use, you're going to wind up with some sort of disadvantage or erasure if you're LGBTQ.

Pretty much. Their worldview is that "gay is never canon, even when it's canon." :/

How do people not realize this! Particularly when, as they comment on whether or not someone was gay, they're standing in the role of persecutor. Though I guess that's they're privilege talking...as always.
We can't ruin the memory of these otherwise perfect historical figures after all!!!11!!

This! The worst thing about privilege is that everyone seems to be aware of the fact it exists...except for those who have it in a particular area. Those people seem to be the most keen to tell you to shut up about the fact that they're privileged.
And don't get me started; I hate the idea that being 100% straight is "perfect" and everything else a "blemish" on that supposed "perfection".

Ugh, and really, what would it cost them to be like, "Yeah, I know that doesn't affect me because I'm white/cis/male/rich/etc," and then shut the fuck up and go back to enjoying their goddamn privilege.
IA! And also, I think it's got to be really, really rare for anyone to be 100% straight (or 100% gay) so these people are being even more hypocritical.

I'm inclined to agree. Obviously, people identify how they identify and if someone says "I'm gay/straight only" I take their word for it, but we should keep in mind how recent that sort of rigid categorization in people's understanding of sexuality is. So, yeah.

And I think when people are saying they're gay or straight they're thinking of the purely of the 'sex' in sexuality. Long story short: IA!
