As soon as you mentioned CV I thought of the SG-1 summary and how it burned me that it seemed to slant toward Jack/Sam when I ship Jack/Daniel. So I went back to find an excerpt to trash here, and when I re-read it I realized the writer gave an equal statement to both pairings, but just happened to choose a pic that put Jack closer to Sam than Daniel and that pissed me off.
That'd piss me off, too, actually, because when I 'ship, I 'ship hard. No other pairings will do - ever. I'll never be a pan-'shipper, though I will have secondary 'ships I like. But in every fandom I've been in, I've had a OTP that stayed that way throughout, for me.
I think my big problem with the DS9 section is that Garak wasn't given equal weight in the section on Julian's relationships. Now, in rereading, I can think of rational reasons for this: O'Brien was an actual member of the crew; O'Brien and Julian were tight starting in S3 or so; Keiko was on the show less often, thus more speculation about B/O'B grew; Bashir wore this tight-ass raquetball outfit during his games with O'Brien, etc. If Garak had been the one-off character TPTB had planned, I might not be a B/O'B 'shipper, but I'd probably not loathe it as I do. But that's beside the point - by the end of DS9's run, Garak was a) helping the Federation, b) wearing a Starfleet-issue comm badge, and c) a semi-trusted member of Sisko's supporting team. With all that in mind, he deserved a paragraph, not a sentence.
Clearly, my annoyance meter was just on high that day and it stuck with me. So I guess the point is... uh. Well, maybe that you can't control someone else's slant, but you can try to be more aware of yourself tipping the scale further? Or something like that... :\
So true. Which is why I had to calm down and really think about why it bothered me so. It bothered me because I resent O'Brien being the flirty/maybe gay love interest when Garak was firmly ensconced in that role. That's not the fault of any fans - it's the fault of TPTB. I just figured that . . . well, by buying into B/O'B, it was like accepting TPTB's campaign to deep-six all memory of G/B. And that's stupid - even if G/B had ended up fucking, there would be B/O'Bers. And B/Oers, etc. 'Shipdom is arbitrary . . . you like what pairings you like for your own reasons. That's why 'shipper wars to me seem patently pointless. You're likely not going to be able to force your world view on someone else, so why try? Why get pissed off? It bothers me.
So, yes. I'm largely over this whole thing, because at the end of the day, my OTP is my OTP, and, well, nobody's forcing me to acknowledge B/O'B. And . . . I don't!

Exactly! People who write one story with Brian/Justin and then another with Ben/Justin just freak me out. Someone else once said it's okay if it's just sex or part of an agsty plot that is eventually resolved, but don't ever try to tell me it's true love when it's not my OTP! And ITA!!
That's not the fault of any fans - it's the fault of TPTB.
Oh, man, TPTB in any fandom just suck royally. I guess that's why I wasn't into true slash until recently (debate of QaF as slash elsewhere, yawn) because it was hard for me to go against the canon pairing of TPTB. If I got Buffy/Angel crammed down my throat in every episode, I had a problem reading stories about Angel/Xander.
But Stargate was easy for me because with the no fraternizing in the military rule, there isn't any real canon romance between the characters and I can let my imagination run wild with all the "don't ask, don't tell" innuendo between Daniel and Jack. Rowrr...
Also, the lack of anymore interference from TPTB of 'dead' fandoms is probably why I've suddenly become such a pan fandom slut. I have a loose grasp of the basic storyline of a lot of them, even if I wasn't a diehard fan when they aired, so when someone like yourself makes a good case for their OTP I can totally get into it because the actual canon stuff (like Ezri and Ziyal getting between the G/B lovefest) just goes right over my head. Ignorance really is bliss.
And again to reiterate your original point, I may be a pan fandom slut, but I'm not a pan shipping whore. I ship one OTP hardcore in any fandom. ;)
