I have difficulty with QAF recaps because they can be very biased. I'm not really a shipper because I like B/J but I also like B/M and Ben/M.
Wow! A pan-'shipper, sort of. That's cool, 'cause you'll likely find something to like in each episode, as opposed to being an unconventional 'shipper ::ahem Ted/Brian:: wherein you're usually SOL.
So when reading recaps or summaries like Danny's, Whatlovemeans, Xof, Charley, etc they're hard to read when they become biased against certain characters. When they seem to go out of their way to make fun of a character or even an actor is when I get frustrated because it's not necessary.
Actor-bashing is just low. It has no place anywhere; not in recaps, not in fic, nowhere. I don't like Hal Sparks much. I've met the man and he was amazingly nice, but I can't forget how much of an asshat he was about his "straightness" when the show first started. That said, I would not bash him outside my personal journal or in IMs to friends. Commenting on an actor's skills in a recap is kind of harsh, IMO. People vary on this, though. In Smallville, recappers often note who is mailing it in, which actor is not emoting enough, etc. Honestly? That kinda stuff bugs me. If I can get lost in the show for the duration, than the goal of being entertained has been achieved. But that's JMO.
Also it seems that newbies get directed to these when asking for places to go and some of these people are so clueless about the show overall that they're easily influenced and tend to get a different view of the show because of that.
Point taken. But in defense, I have to say recapping is a thankless job. You're squeezing the show down into bite-size morsels, and depending on your view of the character/storyline/show, you likely are going tick some people off. I'm glad QaF has recappers, and I'm glad that they aren't all B/Jers, B/Mers, etc. Variety is great. But I think it would not be wise to form an opinion of a show based solely off recaps. It'd be the same if you based your opinion on a show based solely off fanfic. I'd have been a huge XFiles fan if I was just going by fanfic, but watching the show made my stomach turn. Conversely, I loves Smallville at the beginning, but a lot of the CLex fic out there doesn't do it for me. Crazy, huh?
