(
Chat One Transcript here.)
Today's our second OTW chat! It will take place on January 3rd, starting at 8:00 p.m. GMT (9:00 Central Europe Time, 2 p.m. CST, 3 p.m. EST). It will last an hour or so.
You can see what time that is for you locally on here. We have a moderated channel on irc.sff.net, #otw. When people enter the room, they will not be able to speak initially. To allow someone to speak, an op will have to give them voice privs.
If you're *sure* you're coming to the chat today, please comment below with the name of your handle on IRC. We'll have questions and comments in the order of these sign-ups. If you'd like to comment *with* your question already to save a bit of time, you can feel free to do so, otherwise, just sign up here and the floor will be yours. Please understand that we'll probably be going with a one-question, one-two follow-ups format. You can check out our previous chat transcript if you'd like a feel for how it went before.
If, during the chat you find that you have something to add/a side comment/question to whatever we're discussing, simply ping Ciderpress or Madelyn and they'll voice you accordingly.
And in case you missed these last time - IRC instructions!
NOTE: Please do not ask any technical/troubleshooting questions about how to work IRC in this post - ask your friends, ask your blog readers, whatever, but this is more a really rough starting point for you to use. If you *do* ask questions here, be aware that you're flinging yourself on the mercies of your fellow OTWers because Community Relations just...isn't the group you want answering your troubleshooting questions. *g*
IRC instructions for PC users:
1. Download
mIRC and install.
2. When you open mIRC, you'll see the "Options" dialog box pop up, with an area on the left side that starts with "Connect", subsection, "Servers". If you don't see this, in mIRC's top toolbar row, the second icon in from the left looks like a folder with a hammer. Click that and it opens up the Options window.
3. If you don't tell mIRC where to go, just picks a random IRC server out of its built-in list, so now we need to set the server to the specific one we will be using for the chat, irc.sff.net. Click on the "Add" button. At the top of the window it says IRC Network and then IRC Server. There are Add/Edit/Delete buttons, so first click "Add". In the add server window, for "Description" and for IRC server put in: irc.sff.net. Ignore everything else. Click Add and go back to the dialog page, the original one, and now now for IRC server you should see irc.sff.net.
4. Now in the left-hand menu click on "Connect" one level up and you will see options for Full Name, Email Address, Nickname, Alternative. You can put in whatever you want. (We'd greatly prefer if you could use your best-known current online name for Nickname, so it's easier to see who you are at first glance.)
5. Then type in /join #otw and you should be in the chatroom! If you don't see anyone else there at the time of the chat, it probably means you are on the wrong IRC server -- try redoing step #3, or visit our Campfire chatroom for help:

IRC instructions for Mac users:
1. Download
Colloquy and install.
2. When you open Colloquy, you should get a box that's titled "Connections." If you don't, Go to "Window" in your menu bar and choose "Connections." In the Connections box you'll have a row of icons that say "New", "Join Room", "Message User", "Console", "Info", and "Delete."
Choose "New." A dialog box will open up that says New Connection. Enter the nickname you want to use, leave Server Protocol on IRC (Internet Relay Chat) and for Chat Server, enter irc.sff.net then click "connect", If you have your sound on, you should hear a sharp ding that indicates the chat client connected to the server.
3. Now hit the "Join Room" icon. Make certain the connection is set as irc.sff.net. In the Chat Room box you're going to enter #otw (don't forget the # or it won't take you to the right place!) and that will bring you into the chat. If you don't see anyone else there at the time of the chat, it probably means you are on the wrong IRC server -- try redoing step #3, or visit our Campfire chatroom for help:
