TAS'S TOP TEN SINGLES OF 2004!!!!!
Now mind you, these are in no particular order. I just grabbed 10 songs I really dug, and threw 'em together. Feel free to reply with your opinions or your own picks. By the way, as a bonus, whenever I found 'em, I included a link to either an mp3 or video of the song. Anyway, let's get on with it...
The Thermals - How We Know - One of the simplest, hookiest pop songs I've heard in a long time. The repetitive lyrics run through your head like a mantra. And that's a good thing.
The Hives - Walk Idiot Walk - Leave it to the Hives to make me wanna break stuff again. More straight-ahead, mindless punk goodness.
Muse - Time Is Running Out - About time this group got notice. Imagine Radiohead with less pretension and more rocking your face.
The Walkmen - The Rat - The ultimate "I'm old, lonely and angry, and I'm gonna let everyone know" song. The constant guitar riff gives this song a haunting vibe that sells this song hard.
William Shatner - Common People - You heard me right. With a little help from Ben Folds and Joe Jackson, Shatner puts a perfect cheesy polish on this Pulp hit from the '90's. Guilty pleasure of the year.
Phoenix - Everything is Everything - It seems France picked up disco once the world was sick of it, cut out all the crap, and transformed it into a slick fusion of dance and power pop. And Phoenix are the latest practicioners of this catchy style.
The Streets - Fit But You Know It - Mike Skinner proves once again that the best white MC in the world isn't from Detroit, but from the wilds of the United Kingdom. Man, I need to use more British slang...
Coheed and Cambria - A Favor House Atlantic - The Emo movement is starting to fizzle out, and while a lot of it has been rendered unlistenable, there are still a few great songs there, and here's one of them. Claudio Sanchez's falsetto drives this song over the edge, but makes it "love it or hate it" material.
The Killers - Mr. Brightside - A bittersweet new wave song about loving a prostitue. And since the Killers are from Las Vegas, it may even be true. Bonus points for the video featuring the ultra-creepy Eric "I'm Julia's Brother!" Roberts. Random thought: if someone in Hollywood made a buddy movie featuring Roberts and Peter Gallagher as brother mass murderers, I think that person deserves a Nobel Prize or something. Maybe that's just me.
Franz Ferdinand - The Dark of the Matinee - A slinky, subversive jam about hooking up when nobody's looking. More proof that these Scots are the best new band of the year.
