Yesterday Erin's mom and dad came out and worked on the house for a few hours while we were both at work. They came back to our house, had a little Chipotle, then we headed over to Ikea to pick up our cabinets.
I called and talked to the kitchen staff at Ikea several weeks ago and was told that our cabinet door style was always in stock and that I could just come pick them up any time I wanted. So of course when we go to do this some of stuff was "special order". We were able to pick up the cabinet frames, and the drawers and door fronts will have to be delivered in a week or two. We also picked out a vent hood for over the stove, and that was a special order item too.
This morning we went out to the house and looked at the cabinets, and we realized we should probably finish the walls and get a coat of primer on them before we installed them just to make things easier on ourselves.
We also put together a cabinet frame just to see how it would go and to get a gauge for how things would fit. Despite following the instructions, we still had to take it apart once because we got some things backwards.
Another item on our kitchen agenda was to change the size of the cut-out for the refrigerator. The fridge we have picked out is about an inch too tall to fit. It also requires a 4 inch space at the top for ventilation. So our first step was to demolish it.
Tim and I tried to figure out how to build a frame that we could slide in there. While we worked on that, Erin and Patty steamed some more wallpaper from the upstairs bathroom.
I was worried about the grout job I did on Wednesday, so I gave the floors a quick scrub and I was much relieved - they look great! They do need another coat of sealer and a semi-gloss finisher to make them really stand out.
I worked on a few other odds and ends jobs, like patching the drywall around this old chimney vent. It will eventually be capped and behind the pantry, but there was a gaping hole surrounding it that needed to be filled.
With all the rain we found this chimney was never capped, and it was leaking rain into the house.
I had to climb on the roof to measure it, so while I was at it I threw a bag over it to stop the rain from getting in.
Nice view from up here.
It was a long day so we retired for the evening. Tomorrow will be a another day of work work work! Erin is afraid I will get burnt out but I don't see that happening for a while. I really enjoy this stuff.
