Five years after the end of the war, Snape was forced to attend yet another ceremony regaling the heroes of the war. McGonagall played dirty, invoking Dumbledore’s name to guilt Snape into showing up, as she had for every other excuse the Wizarding World had come up with to celebrate.

Snape sat at a table in the back, misanthropic mask firmly in place to deter any Wizard who might make the mistake of attempting to talk to him. Harry, the bloody Gryffindor, approached at one point and tried to apologize, yet again, for attacking Snape that night. One particularly vicious glare and Harry stuttered to a stop, then backed away quickly before outright fleeing.

After that, no one approached him. Which is why he was surprised for a fleeting instant when someone sat down beside him. He turned, wand in hand, prepared to hex the person just for spite, but he stopped when he saw that the blonde was leafing through an upside-down magazine and seemed blithely unaware of him.

“Miss Lovegood, there are at least a dozen tables here. Surely you can find another seat?”

Luna looked up at him with a complacent expression.

“You seem to attract nargles. They’re good luck, you know. Never hurts to have them around.”

Snape stared at her, rage warring with laughter. He suddenly stilled at her next words, though.

“That’s how I knew you were always on our side. Nargles won’t go near anyone with bad intentions -- and you’ve always attracted them.”
