Contagious by Scott Sigler - sequel to _Infected_ - The blue triangles are still infecting people, but the entity creating them has changed them so that some of the people infected are now able to infect others. Perry Dawsey, the only known survivor, is still connected to the others somehow and leads a government team to infected people, while another military team tries to shut down areas where the infected are building gates. But this time, one of the infected has been made able to command others so they can try to outwit the hunters. Great and gory. (A to Z title, S/T)
Whisper to the Blood by Dana Stabenow - newest Kate Shugak. A mining company is buying land in the Park and is doing massive PR to try to short circuit the negative opinion of the local natives. But when one of the most outspoken opponents is murdered - and later, the company's PR person also - Kate and Jim Chopin are called into action. Meanwhile Kate is also dealing with becoming a member of the local council and repercussions from events from the previous book are also causing problems. Love this series. Excellent writing, great characters.(Pub)
Voodoo River by Robert Crais - Elvis Cole is hired to trace the family history of a popular tv actress who was adopted as a child and heads to Louisiana. There he falls for local lawyer Lucy Chenier and discovers that the actress's past is tied to a long ago murder and current illegal human smuggling. Good story. Elvis and Lucy are great together. Good depiction of the south with both good and bad sides. (A to Z title, TBR)
Shinju by Laura Joh Rowland - Sano Ichiro, a new yoriki (senior police commander), is assigned to a shinju - a double suicide of lovers of different social classes. Except that he suspects both were murdered, but to investigate, he must go against his superior officers and face down a powerful family with ties to the shogunate. Wonderful detail of Japan in 17th century Edo and Ichiro is a good and conflicted character. The mystery is fairly standard, especially for a first novel, but I'm told the series gets better as it goes along.(A to Z author)
