livejournal, i'm pretty sure that the Leader of My Household (girl originally from albany who selected me in august for roommate beauty pageant crown and now collects all my checks) gave an Unofficial Blessing for matthew to move into my basement. NEXT STOP: BLISS.
maybe it'll happen, maybe it won't. there are things i'll miss about his "residence" in ellicott city, maryland. surburbia is alright, sometimes. the korean presbyterian church that exists a mere .2 of a mile away certainly lends a feeling of safety & godliness. they have a spillover parking lot. they attend services more than once a week, often on friday nights. if there's a god i'm in big trouble. on friday night i connived matthew into buying me a 40 oz of colt 45 (they were out of olde english) - he's never tried a 40 before, being australian & cultured & normal. he was surprised to learn that 40 oz brands are often endorsed by superstars in the hiphop community. i'm opening up a whole new world to him. we forgot to drink the 40 oz but somewhere in maryland it waits for us.
on saturday we were benevolent to the cats that reside at his house. these cats do not belong to us and are not particularly clean or healthy. but they've got a taste for the outside, like a mean taste for blood. we let the cats roam around the yard for a few frigid minutes. the more obese of the two ran like a fat bullet across the leafy lawn. back and forth. it was the most amazing sight i've ever witnessed. it sure took a lot of momentum but once he was up and running, man - there was no stopping that animal. i buckled over laughing - thank you, tigger.
we agonized in the grocery store over which paper plates to buy - it was for the cake i bought matthew, it was HIS BIRTHDAY yesterday. !! so, on saturday, we met up with a bunch of his old lab co-workers and his old roommate and an australian friend. we went to scenic baltimore and although our agreed-upon meeting place was either closed or condemned we managed to find a sports bar in fells point to gather at. i had such a great time, scientists are pretty much a million times better than medical doctors, it was proven by the one medical doctor in attendance who was the ultimate jerk/stiff and all the scientists being hilarious. it was good to meet more of his friends, although i think i temporarily insulted his australian friend when i observed that his and matt's accents differed. but we were friends over sports, vegemite & south park. some people had extra pieces of cake, so my cake worrying/toiling was all for nothing.
we watched a silent running of the preakness. it was troubling to hear about how one of the race horses was euthanized directly off the track. dislocated foot/hoof, or something? they didn't euthanize barbaro. why couldn't they give this horse a chance, too? we stayed a long time, i was the designated driver of course, we went to soundgarden for matthew to use the gift cert his friend rod gave him. we walked to the car past the part of the harbor that held the sugar refineries and who knows what other industrial places. domino sugar's sign was lit up in red neon. it was thirty five degrees in baltimore when we left. matt's family called just as we made it into the car. i got to hear his brother's voice for the first time. he sounded kind.
sunday was his actual birthday. 30! i was excited for him. i had to take the GREs yesterday, which bummed me because i was tricked into believing it was this 4 hour marathon process and i'd have to be away from him for a long time. he drove me to howard university and i got there early and the dude/official proctor was lax and told me i could just start! the first writing section took me all 45 minutes, i prattled (badly) about effective leaders & whether or not they needed to be perfectly moral and ethical - i think i talked about stalin & the leadership in present day madagascar? then in my second essay i had to write about UV radiation and turtle shells. i think matt would've liked that one. i had to take it all ON A COMPUTER, which was tough - they gave me neon orange sound-proofing headphones to wear. the kind you'd wear at a shooting range. anyway i thought i "stuffed up", i really did, especially because i kept taking practice math tests and scoring like 20% on the geometry questions - but i got a 750 on the math and an embarrassing 690 on verbal or something. GRAD SCHOOL?!
well i got done with it in about 2 hours 40 mins & matt picked me up. and we shot out of dc for a bit to gather up some yuengling in maryland (no liquor sales in dc on sundays, what?) - and then he opened presents. i hope i did alright. i got him a dvd of a show he'd wanted, and 4 clothing items, and birkenstocks. also i got him meat pies. he loves meat pies and you can't get them here so i ordered them. they're actual little pies filled with questionable meat/gravy. he talks the world of them so i'm hoping that these meat pies represent. they're from texas so i'm nervous.
last night we went to a steakhouse and split a bottle of red wine. i'm still full. we ran down the massive escalator at dupont circle
and got home to watch the beginning of the pats losing to the colts. bill belichick looked festive in his red sweatshirt.
i'm excited for the rest of november & the rest of the year. his parents are coming over next year & it means a lot to me that they'll finally meet my parents. i doubt that dickson city, pennsylvania has ever received such a contingent of fine people & i'm excited about it. if anything big happens with us, i would unashamedly invite about 20 of you reading this to it. i mean, in addition to the other, non-lj reading people. i wonder if that's crazy? i wonder if any of you would come. i hope so! i think we'll see.
i always like how, morning-noon-or-night, the arched ceilings of the metro have these refined lights and shadows. like you're at an opera house. or illuminated museum? maybe it's just me.
he's so kind to tolerate me? i adore this picture.
